Chevrolet V-6 Takes First Race In Return To Indy Car Racing

    SportsCar Illustrated

    • Chevrolet's new Indy V6 engine swept four of the top five spots.

Helio Castroneves punctuated Chevrolet’s return to Indy car racing following a six-year absence by winning the IZOD IndyCar Series season-opening Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Castroneves led 28 laps en route to his third career win at the 1.8 mile street course.

This was a great effort for everyone,” said Castroneves, who moved into a tie for 13th place on IndyCar’s all-time list with his 26th career victory. “Chevy did a great job to keep everything under control. We had some issues in the beginning that we have to raise the revs so that we can have the battery, or something like that. But, to be honest, it didn't upset us, it makes our temperature in the engine very nice and everything went really smooth.”

Castroneves, who drives for legendary team owner Roger Penske, paced six Team Chevy drivers in the top eight: Ryan Hunter-Reay (third), James Hinchcliffe (fourth), Ryan Briscoe (fifth), pole-sitter Will Power (seventh) and E.J. Viso (eighth).

I am so happy to see Chevy back into this racing series. When the two series broke off from each other we were left with Ford in one camp, and Honda and Toyota in the other. By the time they came back to one series we had just Honda left (ho hum). It is good to see Chevy and for a lesser part Lotus in the series. It would be nice to see Dodge and Ford come in too.

Chevrolet just demonstrated how far behind Honda has fallen in technology. They are uncompetitive. As soon as Chevrolet starts kicking butt, you will see the horder of them come back to the series next year. Watch for Porches, BMW and probably Ford to join.. me thinks...They cannot resist any the urge, since they know Chevrolet is getting the mileage..

    But they will be beat..

Re: Chevrolet V-6 Takes First Race In Return To Indy Car Racing

Not enough money in Indy Car racing to support a lot of different manufacturers, plus the rules package kind of narrows the field. I am a bit surprised Chevy is back in. I think its great they are. When it was just Honda, it was because the series made a decision to go with one engine builder and one chassis to save money. Made for a boring series. I guess with the reunification they have worked on the rules for the car and opened it up for some more manufacturers to get in the game. I am still waiting for them to allow Offy's back in the game.

    Thanks for posting.

It's a little surprising that things went this well for the Chevy Indy-V6. They didn't have a lot of time for development. I would have expected more mechanical issues at the first race. That's a major win for the engineers that developed this race engine.

Don't have that handy, but these are the engine requirements for the series:

    Engine basics

Cylinders – Up to six, all of equal capacity
RPM – 12,000 as restricted by the Engine Control Unit
Horsepower – Between 550 and 700 dependent on type of circuit
Fuel – E85; fuel injection allowed
    Fuel capacity – 18.5 U.S. gallons
Oil – Can use only lubricating oil that is readily available to the general public through retail methods
Boost pressure – 155KPa for road courses, 140KPa for short ovals and 130KPa for speedways. Two boost sensors will be fitted and monitored by INDYCAR
Minimum weight – 112.5kg (248 pounds) excluding items such as the clutch, ECU, fluids, turbo charger
Turbocharged – Single or twin featuring water-cooled bearing housing and titanium turbine wheel
Mounting – Common mounting points on bulkhead and gearbox for all three manufacturers
Engine life – 1,850 miles. Each full-season entrant will receive five fresh engines per year
“Push to Pass” – Not to start season
    KERS – No
    Pop-off valve – No
    Traction control -- No
    Anti-stall -- Yes

    Engine architecture

    Bank Angle – V6 engines - between 60 and 90 degrees
    Bore – V6 engines - 95mm diameter maximum
Engine length – V6 - 460mm, measured from mounting face to mounting face
Crankshaft height – 100mm above bottom of chassis (lowest point of sump)
One piece crankshaft – homogenous with no additional non-ferrous inserts or bolt-on balance weights
Main bearing minimum dimension – 48mm diameter
Big end journal minimum dimension – 40mm diameter
Connecting rods – Homogenous, no welding or bonding
Piston pin – single piece only
Valve type – Reciprocating circular poppet, return force via coil spring only
Spark plug – One per cylinder otherwise free
Coatings – DLC coatings are not permitted on crankshafts, rods, camshafts, piston skirts or sleeves.
Camshafts – Up to four overhead camshafts permitted (2 per bank)

The series did not make the decision to have Honda only. Chevy and Toyota decided to pull out of Indycars in 2006, I believe. That left only Honda, and Honda agreed to supply engines to the series. When engine specs were changed for 2012, to make engines more inline with what companies produced, Chevy, then Lotus decided to enter.

Indy is still going? Really? About as applicable as NASCAR.

I got excited from the title, thought we were talking about Chevy V6's not corporate GM V6's. Still, impressive!

Great to see Chevy power in open wheel again and great to see them win their first race back.
