    Bathurst 1000 Penalty too Harsh?

Garth Tander slams Jamie Whincup after late-race crash ended his Bathurst 1000 hopes

    Herald Sun

    Rebecca Williams
    October 10 2016

GARTH Tander has slammed Jamie Whincup’s “pretty desperate” move that triggered a disastrous chain-reaction, sending the Holden Racing Team driver crashing into the wall and ending his Bathurst 1000 hopes.

And HRT team owner Ryan Walkinshaw didn’t hold back either, saying the team had been “robbed” after the dramatic three-car incident on lap 150 that ended the race hopes of Tander, Scott McLaughlin and Whincup at Mount Panorama.

It all started when Whincup tried a passing move on the inside of McLaughlin, forcing the Volvo driver off the track. When McLaughlin found his way back onto the track he then collided with Tander, who was wedged in behind Whincup, forcing the HRT veteran crashing into the wall.

Well where I saw on track Yesterday the reaction from race fans was pretty universal

The strongest reaction was from Ford fans of course but pretty much everyone was bashing Whincup

The cheers that went up all around me when he got the penalty and then when the safety car came out with a couple laps to go was very telling

I was down on the exit of Hell Corner near the Pit exit and there were all types of race fans around me from Nissan to Volvo to Ford and Holden fans

I didn't hear much approval for Jamie

It wasn't on. JMO but I was watching from Queensland. We've had many a replay in the office.

I'm kind of sympathetic to Jamie because I can see what he was doing but in the heat of racing the rush of blood it all went tits up for him

Phil Brock was not so kind

He publically said that he didn't want Jamies name on Peter's Trophy on the tenth anniversary year

I guess next year, Jamie Whincup will think twice about shoveling someone out of the road.

    Roasting words from Phil Brock,
So sad to be the fastest man on the day yet lose the respect of his own peers.
Maybe he needs to take a good long hard look at the WAY he tries to win.....

To be honest, I have lost interest in Supercars over the last few years - I was not even watching at the time. It is great to see a couple of the smallest teams on the podium but it doesn't seem like a fair penalty. From what I can tell, he was penalised for the result of him trying to give the place back which seems back to front.

I see where you are coming from Isszy but I feel it was still worth a ten second penalty. I think his appeal may get the penalty reduced to 10 but I doubt that it would be overturned.
It still amazes me that you can have a margin of 0.1434 seconds after 1000 kilometres but the one that freaks me out is that if you add up the margins for the last four Bathurst 1000's you get a combined margin of 1.2523 seconds! That is just freakish!

Re: Bathurst 1000 Penalty too Harsh?

I'm a bit of a purest (read 'old fart') and I see that margin being somewhat manufactured. I long for the good old days (bad old days ?) when there were no safety cars, just double waved yellows to indicate there was a tilt-tray on the track picking up some crippled car, and then that the truck was tootling down the track back to the pits at 50km/h.

Brocky could never have won by 6 laps under the current rules.

Speaking of which, did anybody manage to sit through the second episode of Brock ? As a Brocky tragic, I had been really looking forward to it, but I was pretty underwhelmed by the first episode. I would have watched the second but had to go to a school function last night.

I know it was fiction, but some of the mistakes were amateurish. Like Peter telling Bev how he changed into 5th gear down Conrod straight in the XU-1 (four speed) and the supposed 1969 Bathurst street scene with an LH Torana in it (not released til 74). The opening scene at Hume Weir was a bit like 'Fast and Furious', with constant cuts to the gear lever and floor pedals for unnecessary gearchanges.

People are saying 'Rush' had similar faux pas but I think it was a better script.

Re: Bathurst 1000 Penalty too Harsh?

I didn't bother with the second episode. The first one was too much like a contemporary Australian drama (offspring/house husbands/Love Child). <-Note: I had to google those shows as I don't ACTUALLY watch them.

As for the tap, I think the penalty reduction to 10 secs is the most reasonable assessment I've heard so far.

Also, the Redbulls spent a lot of their day relying on people letting them through after entering a dangerous situation (see Van Ginz at Forest elbow x3).

Re: Bathurst 1000 Penalty too Harsh?

I absolutely loved the 90 odd laps before the first safety car

I'm in the camp of letting the race run its course as well but I do understand the safety aspect of it

As for the miniseries Brock I think it would have been better served to run over the course of a week or at least 3-4 days to really flesh out some of the more controversial or even memorable moments in Peter's career

They didn't even mention Spa or the Word Touring car championship tour he did through Europe or even the Repco Rally.

Part 2 was better than part 1 and the ending did get me a little emotional remembering the sad day that made grown men cry all over the country

Those who did see the ending to see Allan Moffat standing on P1 at Mount Panorama just looking back was well done IMO

I agree the acting was poor and inaccuracies drove me nuts but it did improve slightly in the second one

I was watching the F1's when Bathurst was at the pointy end. Which was a waste of time because unusually for Suzuka it was boring.

I'll give the second ep a look when I get a chance.

The Brock family isn't happy with it at all

I expected that to be honest it wasn't very good and they certainly deserved better

The funniest part of the Brock miniseries for me was when
Harry Firth pegged an alarm clock at PB.....Gold.
