Vauxhall ramps up product offensive with new SUV and electric vehicle
General Motors chief Mary Barra reaffirms plans for 29 new European models
through Vauxhall and Opel between 2016 and 2020

    Autocar
    by Richard Bremner
    15 September 2015

More details of Vauxhall’s planned flagship SUV have emerged as General Motors adds more new cars to the ambitious European product plan it has in place between 2016 and 2020.

“This all-new SUV will be produced in Rüsselsheim by the end of decade and will give the brand a further technological boost.”

The new flagship SUV model, due by 2019/20, will use GM's Ypsilon architecture, and share many core elements with a new Cadillac SUV. It will be built at Russelsheim, where the Cadillac version could also be made if the planned relaunch of a new, more European-flavoured (and right-hand-drive optioned) Cadillac range succeeds.

GM will also introduce a new electric vehicle in Europe that will not be based on the Chevrolet Bolt, according to Barra.

Didn't the PSA mash-up fall apart???

[email protected] electric not based on the Bolt... so based on the Volt?

Oh, and Caddy sharing core elements with Opel? Buick is going to get jealous!

The long-term alliance with PSA was quickly disbanded but the early arrangement for PSA to build the replacements for Meriva and Zafira have gone ahead.

Vauxhall can't use the Bolt, it's not engineered for RHD as it's designed in USA - there's no value in Opel using it without Vauxhall's substantial volume.

For one generation? What happens after? Or is this just so that GM doesn't have to write a 2 billion cheque to PSA...? And these will be built in a PSA plant? Opel unions must be realllllly happy about that!

Re: Vauxhall ramps up product offensive with new SUV and electric vehicle

Sounds great to me Jeep sales are out of control in Europe up 124.2% last month bucking market trends.

This SUV should be a nice little earner for Opel with high profit margins something that Opel needs more of to help it break even, great stuff fuel prices are plunging in the EU. Opel needs more top of the range products, when they are offered with a Opel/Vauxhall they are very well received the Mokka being a typical example. Electric cars seem sensible but nobody is really buying them in the EU with a big fall in oil prices that look like its heading for 20 bucks a barrel.

BMW Group surprised me last month they jumped above Ford and GM in Europe in sales. A good month for Opel/Vauxhall in August sales were up +15% that's great news.

GM need to keep a sharp eye EU diesel regulations as they are changing and might see similar legislation on NOx as the U.S. With a lot of high anti diesel fees for being allowing diesel vehicle to drive in urban areas big cities to clean up NOx particulate with something like a $15 a day levie to drive into a EU city. Which will force folk out of diesel cars long term.

Seriously? Is GM still building vehicles that cannot be converted to RHD or LHD? That is insane.

There is hardly any profit in these cars - the European MPV market is shrinking, customers are moving to SUVs.

Zafira is doing reasonably well in the UK at the moment, in Germany and rest if Europe not so well (BMW 2 Active Tourer is already outselling the Zafira in Germany 3 to 1: GM giving Zafiras away, BMW charging full price and plant at 100% capacity).

As far as I know hardly anything built in the U.S. by GM is engineered for RHD, the old Zeta Camaro was because it was designed by Holden but GM wouldn't make it, now I've read the other day the new Camaro is not engineered for RHD. I don't think any of the Caddy's or Trucks are engineered for it either.
Has me baffled why every other car maker can manufacture their cars in LHD/RHD but GM can't.

Ford USA don't seem to have any such problems, RHD Mustang & Edge will be on sale globally soon, Aussie designed Ranger can be sold anywhere LHD/RHD that will becoming back to the U.S.

GM can't ever offer a pick-up in Europe one of its 4 big global markets 0 sales again last year, Toyota do bother and sold 675,000 LHD/RHD Hiluxesclast year outside North America is a record breaking No1 best selling vehicle 34 countries globally making billions in profits for Toyota Mo Co. Cadillac/Lincoln are the only two quality brands that don't offer RHD, even newbies Tesla offer RHD and are doing well off the back of it to the one third of the world that still have RHD.

    Identical effect though.

GM NA's concept of global is "hey guys, just buy what we use" and then GM NA wonders why that doesn't work well.

As was the Bolt... and Avenir... doesn't bode well. Or was that just the show cars?

She did not say it was unique so my first thought was the Volt.
