Spied: Interior of the next generation Opel Astra

2015 Opel Astra interior spied at Nurburgring
Seems to have arrested the current car’s descent into button layout madness

Although it’s covered in plenty of shrouding and tape, the interior of the next-generation Astra will feature a clearly delineated two-tier dashboard, with controls for the entertainment and navigation systems on the top level, while the climate control buttons and knobs reside on the lower level.

Like every new car coming out of GM, the new Astra looks like it will feature the company’s MyLink touchscreen entertainment system, which can utilise selected smartphone apps, like Spotify and Stitcher. At first glance, the new Astra seems to have arrested the current car’s descent into button layout madness.

Yes, surprisingly de-buttoned for a European car.

I just drove my parents new GMC Terrain SLT, what a confusing array of buttons and too many choices on the screen. My ATS CUE is worlds easier to use..... Less buttons = better....

My main interests in the new Astra:

Will it come as a three-door GTC hatch, and will that come as a Buick?

    Ford/Lincoln say otherwise.

I believe a certain minimum number of buttons should exist, namely volume knobs and the such. At least CUE has dedicated sliders for different functions. Touch screens shouldn't replace all the buttons.

But yes, the current Opel have an amazing number of buttons.

Agreed, but the more "named" buttons you have the worse it is, in my opinion.

All I want is to turn the chevrons into buttons, but GM won't do that because it's too many moving parts and the car would cost 10˘ more to make per button.

For the record, I'm almost positive that the only reason we have "a haptic feedback center stack" and a "digital gauge cluster" is because it's a convenient reduction of parts under the guise of technological advancement.

It was cheaper than physical buttons and was an excuse to put a mountain of cheap **** plastic over a reasonably wide swath of car.

I love my mountain of cheap **** plastic over a reasonably wide swath of car. Easy to use, looks awesome to me. Makes the German's interiors look like old mens suits to me.

I know I fell the same as you I was so mad they would not let us have the current version. GM NA seems to hate hatch backs for some reason.

I also like simplicity, which is true elegance according to Steve Jobs.

Whatever you might wanna say about the Veyron, there's not an abundance of knobs and buttons to distract you.

I kind of like the techy look of a lot of buttons, but really found their MyLink coupled with all the buttons hard to use/not intuitive. And if I find it hard to use, my 75 year old parents will really struggle with it. But part is just getting used to it I guess. The MyLink would probably work better with a larger screen, as the Terrain is an older chassis the touch screen is kind of small for the amount of options available to press on it.

Though I also like the simple, elegant look of the Bugatti. Though my Cadillac is highly different looking, I actually like the techy, but simple look of the CUE interior.

I would like to know the same thing. They could really use something like this in lowering the median buyer age thing.

True. It seems that GM really needs to be shoved into doing the "right" thing at times.

Yeah, like above they seem to want to be in the "Oh Crap, now we gotta play catch up" mode way too often.

I know, it's like a phobia or paranoia thing isn't it. Other makers do them and the public bites but GM seems to have this lame-ass mentality that America is a no-go for hatches.

I think it would be a good idea if they did. Or at least the 5 door hatch.

However I would expect the 4 door sedan version of the Astra to be strongly connected to the next Buick Verano.

Maybe Buick should start to consider a performance version of it's cars and call it GNX? ... Verano GNX, Regal GNX? I think if done right it won't tarnish the GNX name. Make them performance sleepers.

Hopefully there's a Verano GS variant.

Thats right keep it as simple as possible and user friendly without to many distracting buttons like an iPhone, the less buttons to fumble through the more user friendly it becomes the more the system will be liked by Astra owners who will want to repeat buy the car, and become brand loyal. Astra infotainment system looks very user friendly less of a distraction when you should be concentrating on your driving.

    Yep a fantastic job.
