Opel engineering chief Christian Mueller said in a news release that the decision allows the center to exploit one of its key competencies built up when it had global responsibility for engine development under GM.

Great news for Opel and evidence that at least one of the PSA Group brands will be marketed in North America.

With the Struggles of Volkswagen and Fiat in North America, I do not see how well PSA will fair with Opel, Citroen or Peugeot. They will probably be a niche brand,

PSA won't be out-selling GM in North America any time soon but could do well enough to be profitable 2nd tier brand(s) - they're faster on their feet than GM and will be ready for the next fashion after crossovers much quicker.

Do not be so sure, GM invented the Crossover for the masses..

Fiat is really struggling in North America. So is Maserati, Jaguar, and Alfa amongst others. Yes, I get they would like to give it a shot, but, this is a tough market to thrive in.

    I wish them well.

I thought that accolade went to AMC?

If GM ever had an advantage, it squandered it!

Which AMC? If it did, it certainly did not catch on, I am speaking of the current wave..

Are you sure GM squandered it?

They were also first with this at least in North America

Plus this for the Ruskis, a Russian Collusion if ever there was one

I think he is referring to the AMC Eagle, which is often cited as the first true crossover.

Ah yes, the 2013 Opel Mokka also sold as the Buick Encore - but other makers were building them long before that - AMC Eagle, Matra Rancho, Subaru Outback all lay claim to be the first, depends how you define crossover.

Most European "SUVs" wouldn't be considered off-roaders in North America so by definition must be crossovers - even the LR Freelander pre-dates the Encore by a long way.

I think the most interesting question her is how much GM influence we might see in some of these engines moving forward. It's not at all inconceivable that some of these guys could have worked on pushrod V8 engines or even the soon to debut DOHC V8.

for years we were told GM cold not engineer efficiency in North America nor fwd cars, because they lacked engineering talent in the usa.

?? This is Opel Europe we're discussing - it's been a long time since they've developed anything bigger than 2..0 I4

That reference was intended to be less an indicator of engine size or number of cylinders than of breadth of access to the GM engine catalog. Put simply, it would be a mistake to think that there aren't people here with knowledge of virtually every, if not every, engine program. Engineers in the automotive world often work out of different locales when the need arises in my experience, and even when they don't travel away from 'home' they sometimes work on programs intended for other markets. Ford Dearborn has engineered the last two Transit vans, and I have personally seen Ford engineers working with tier one suppliers in the American Southeast to develop components that will be manufactured in Japan and Brazil for cars intended for those markets.

I'm sure there were/are powertrain engineers working far from home - but for PSA Groupe, including Opel/Vauxhall, nothing bigger than 2.0 I4 is needed at present - few of the Opel guys will have worked on pushrod engines, they were replaced by SOHC/DOHC long ago. The last V6 they worked on was the 54 degree unit built in England and that last V8 was a 5.0 LS1 they tried to put in the Omega but couldn't sort the cooling and inexplicably didn't ask Holden for advice/help as they were doing it routinely with the Monaro and Commodore.
