Opel Sales in Europe up 5 Percent from January to September

Volume increase of over 44,000 units across Europe by end of September
    Pressroom Opel Europe
    2016-10-11

Rüsselsheim. Opel has sold around 895,000 vehicles across Europe in the first nine months of 2016 giving the brand its best result since 2011 despite completely pulling out of the Russian market. This is equivalent to an increase of more than 44,000 vehicle or almost 5.2 percent compared to the same period of 2015. Sales from January to September were up in 18 markets including Germany, France, Spain and Italy. The market share was up in twelve markets. The market share of Opel and its British sister brand Vauxhall of the overall European vehicle markets was at 5.87 percent.

Some interesting and surprising, at least for me, facts about the Opel Mokka: Nearly 60% of all Mokka's are sold with the highest trim-level Innovation for a starting price of €25,350. That's a few thousand Euros above the base price (€18,990, all prices for the new Mokka X). Didn't expected that. But what really surprised me was the diesel vs gas ratio. 70% vs 30% in favour of the ... gas engine.

It's taken a decade or more to educate non-enthusiasts that even at highly taxed fuel costs, a diesel only makes sense for those doing about 15,000 miles/year or more so buyers of non-fleet cars are now buying the petrol/gasoline versions that they should always have bought - that's the market the Mokka is in.

In my case, I learnt it very early after comparing a 100hp diesel/petrol Astra G: +60,000 km/year. No, thank you.

After driving some diesel company cars, I recognized that I don't like them at all. The worst one of them is our newest company car, a Mercedes A-class hatch with the 1.8 turbo diesel and DSG. During a cold start, this engine-transmission combination is the horror. And it's loud inside, cold engine or not, compared to my now 7 years old Corsa. A very disappointing experience, if you consider the price tag.

Well done GM, the not so obvious in that 5% increase is the richer product mix.

I wonder if this spike in sales might come from former VW buyers after the dieselgate/volkswagate did the headlines?

Partly yes. VW faces some stagnation in sales. But the strongest reason is that the Mokka does not have a competitor from VW. Second comes the new Astra.

Not really - VW global sales are down just 1.1% on the year - probably caused by all the new TDIs being stock-piled in the US due to their stop-sale.

Disaffected VW TDI owners are more likely to buy a petrol/gasoline VW than a diesel from another brand.

A spike? More like PR spin.

The European market grew 7% in September, so Opel's 5% increase means GM lost market share in Europe. This is mainly due to a significant private sales drop in the UK. But most car brands selling in the UK are in the same boat.

I'll be interested to see Ford's growth in comparison, I think both manufacturers are building sales
but doing it with more profitable vehicles not just the same old same old.....

Aussie designed Ford Ranger pick-up had a fantastic month with 5,000 sales up 1,600 that double Aussie sales helping those Ford of Europe commercial sales JDP. Mustang sales 1,400 are still constrained by a long wait list now late 2017 if you order one today. RWD Mustang was Ford of Australia No2 best selling vehicle behind the Ranger No1 in Australia in August, why can't Ford produce more RHD Stangs JDP, the LHD market is having a slump in US last month?

Ford look very reliant on Ford UK for its sales in Europe, but VW Group will get the hardest hit in a hard Brexit trade war.

Fords Top 5 markets in the EU September
    1. Ford UK 69,000 sales down -2,300
    2. Ford Germany 25.400 sales up +4,200
    3. Ford Italy 11,800 sales up +1,700
    4. Ford France 8,400 sales down -400
    5. Ford France 7,800 sales down -800

Ford of Europe would be toast sales burned to the ground with mass lay-offs in Germany in a hard Brexit if a proper trade deal is not struck on both sides.

VW Group UK September sales are much higher than Fords (German automaker jobs bloodbath in a hard exit?).
    1. VW Group UK 92,175 sales
    2. Ford UK 69,000 sales

UK September car sales were the highest ever September on record despite a Brexit, it seems to be more expensive German made VW & Fords that Brits are cutting back on, Brits are now buying more British made cars in September as they are cheaper to buy with the lower £.

British-made cars haven't altered price, no need, but the imports are being forced to raise their prices due to the £ Sterling fall against the US Dollar and Euro.

Huge irony that British-built Astras have been subject to the same currency price increase as the German-built Astras - something that's not lost on potential buyers and could hit Vauxhall's sales figures in months to come.
