    Opel preparing 300-horsepower Astra OPC?

The Astra OPC will use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine tuned to make 300 horsepower, an increase of about 20 ponies over the current model. The turbo four will most likely be offered with either a manual or an automatic transmission, but front-wheel drive will be the only configuration available.

The two-door Astra hatchback -- which has been re-named simply GTC for the latest model year -- won't be replaced, so the next-gen OPC will land as a four-door hatchback. German magazine Auto Bild believes a station wagon variant aimed at families in a hurry will be added to the lineup a little later in the production run.

No more GTC? Makes me pretty sad.

    RIP GTC

You were a pretty hatchback, and a great tease.

Europe doesn't want 3-door hatchbacks any more - so no real point Opel developing any form of 3-door version based on the Astra - Ford went that way a while back with the Focus.

300 bhp doesn't sound that much from a 2 litre turbo engine - 2 decades ago in the mid '90s, Vauxhall Sport were getting that out of their non-turbo 2.0 16v Cavalier (Vectra-A) using blueprinted Family II engines but with custom inlet/exhaust systems.

Saw a GTC in Shanghai a few weeks back, which was odd because there's no Opel here. Really is an attractive coupe, sorry to see it go. This new 5-door will be competition for the Focus ST I guess, but wonder if it'll just have the engine, or significant suspension upgrades to go with it too?

I think there was, for like a month a long time ago.

300hp is nothing to sneeze at from a OEM 2.0l Turbo setup. The Focus ST is 252 from a 2.0, but 350hp from the 2.3. Ecboost Mustang is 310hp from a 2.3T.

I would assume this model will slot in right between the ST and RS, which in my opinion is a great place to be.

Yeah just like the last OPC, not a bad place to be. It needs to come here as a Buick, though!

Why is it that Renault still sells the Megane, Peugeot has the 208, Golf GTi 3 door , etc, there is no way Opel is going to be dropping the GTC, even Fiat offers Fiat 500C , therefore, the Coupe is not dead in Europe just yet..

I was under the impression that the GTC may come back not as an Astra GTC, but rather in some form as a FWD 2-3 door compact.

Well, we wouldn't want the Astra OPC, or GTC for that matter, coming over here and outshining the Cascada, would we Duncan "Idaho" Aldred?

If it's an OPC then it will have the trick suspension, drove the current VXR Astra and it was an awesome little car, A 5 door auto version would make the list for my next car if Holden bring it out.

Re: Opel preparing 300-horsepower Astra OPC? | LeftLaneNews

The Opel OPC VXR Astra was a fantastic little car -mechanical LSD and all. But - not $46K good in Australia. It handled great, was a blast to drive, rorty, sporty, fun but struggled to get it's impressive power and torque down. Shortly after I tested it, the VF SS-V was released for about the same $$$. Which would suffer in comparison at a go-kart track or really tight backroad - but nowhere else. Several mags did A/B tests between the Megane or Focus against the VF SS and said - it's a no-brainer. Buy the SS.

I'd see a Megane hot hatch at least once every commute to work - I might see a OPC Astra once every three months. The Megane has carved a real niche for itself, even though it's been ages since it topped the performance stakes. It's as much Euro-kitsch fashion statement as real performance car. They're actually quite challenging to get the most out of, the gearing and power and nervousness makes them not a numb-nuts vehicle.

Even in Europe, where they knocked off the Focus STI and Megane and even GTI Volks in testing, no-one bought them. Because it's an Astra. A rental car with a body kit. Not one in the US is paying Mustang GT or Camaro RS money for one.

I tested a GTC 1.6 turbo in 'GMI Drives' a while ago - it was lovely (horrible faded taxi yellow, yes I know it's their traditional sports/racing colour) and quick on a smooth road, but strangely characterless. The SRi-V Cruze hatch with the same engine/trans/EPS/watts link I got a short while later not only handled real roads better with more steering feel, but had much more character, and was not only better drivable SOTP but got better economy despite being larger/heavier. Go figure.
