So switching production from Zaragoza, Spain to Eisenach, Germany for the Mokka X and from Eisenach to Zargoza for the Adam by the look of things.

The head office accountants in Detroit would just find an even bigger overhead to recharge to Opel - so it'll never officially make a profit.

I'd love to see the internal management accounts, though, to see the real picture.

Sure because normal auditing standards don't apply to GM and German tax authorities don't care that tax is avoided in Germany by transferring costs to the US. Have you ever worked in a multi-national corporate before? I guess not.

Yes, I have - US-owned as it happened but the same happens everywhere regardless of ultimate ownership - head office minimises global taxation by choosing where/when to take profits.

"Normal" accounting standards everywhere take that into account as standard.

At most international subsidiaries, two sets of accounts are maintained - 1) for local management and 2) for local tax authorities and head office - in Italy it's three, the extra one for the Mafia.

I used to design computer accounting systems to cope with such things.

Don't be too hard on him. "Normal" accounting practices (particularly on an international level) can be very difficult to understand. Every country tries to maximize their "take", while at the same time trying to avoid chasing business away to the greener grass on the other side of the border (or ocean). And the rules are constantly changing, as countries try to shift that balance in their own favor.

And on the flip side, every multinational company tries to maximize their income (and pay out as little as possible in taxes). If that means your profits get listed in one country instead of another, you do it!
