Opel Group CEO Dr. Neumann Announces All-new Next Generation Opel Astra

    Opel Media Online
    2015-05-06

    - 11th generation Opel compact car to star at Frankfurt Motor Show in September
    - Opel Group CEO Dr. Neumann promises an efficient, lightweight and spacious car

Rüsselsheim. Continuing an eight-decade long tradition of Opel compact models, Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann will unveil the all-new Astra at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt (September 17 to 27, 2015). Currently, only fully camouflaged engineering development prototypes can be seen, but Dr. Neumann promises that the new Astra will feature “an awesome design”, highest efficiency and an abundance of innovations.

Dr. Neumann has set new development priorities for this 11th generation Opel compact car that has been created from a white sheet of paper, resulting in a revolutionary car that is much more efficient in all respects. Space is used in an efficient way: while its exterior dimensions will be reduced, the space devoted to the new Astra’s occupants in its cockpit will be increased substantially. The engineering teams in charge of the development of the new Astra have also dramatically reduced its weight. This will make it more agile and have an extremely favorable impact on its fuel consumption. Dr. Neumann also confirmed that, as the result of the greatest powertrain offensive in Opel’s history, the new Astra will be powered only by state-of-the-art engines of the new generation.

The compact models Kadett and Astra, of which more than 24 million have been produced so far, have been the core of Opel’s portfolio ever since the first compact vehicle drove off the assembly line. “With each Kadett generation, Opel made individual mobility accessible to millions of people around the world, and several generations of Astra have brought innovative technologies from the upper class into the affordable compact segment,” said Dr. Neumann. “Each generation has raised the bar in safety, comfort and efficiency. The new Astra will once again set standards in the compact class. Amongst others, it will be the first new Opel model to be launched with Opel OnStar’s unique connected service that is ready to help and rescue you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

More rumors about the next gen Astra K from http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/:

Vauxhall may revive the Astra GSi hot hatch brand to sit below the hardcore, Focus RS rivalling, VXR version.

Vauxhall could well dig into its back catalogue of names again for the new hot Astra five-door. The car spied testing above, sporting twin exhausts and beefier alloys, hints at a model sitting somewhere between a new 197bhp 1.6-litre SRi version and a full-blown VXR – and it could be the car to revive the legendary Vauxhall Astra GSi badge.

Looks like the weight saving tech we see on the CT6 is indeed filtering down the GM range. Excellent news.

And it looks like they're finally doing what the Japanese have for so long be so good at: packaging. Take a look at the amount of space in a tiny Honda Fit if you want to know what I'm talking about.

I was even more surprised at how spacious kei-cars are! Japanese are truly the masters of packaging. It is in their nature and culture.

Are they launching OnStar in Europe, or has that been a thing for a while?

It is a relaunch (Onstar was canceled in 2004 IIRC).

Btw, in 2017 every new car in Germany (Europe?) must have a SOS button installed. Nice to have a system like Onstar that offer much more.

Some preproduction reviews spoke of 120 kg (260 lbs) up to 200 kg (440 lbs), depending on trim level, engine and powertrain.

Even more impressive is that Karl-Thomas Neumann's doctoral degree is in Electrical Engineering - perfectly suited to his role at an automobile manufacturer.

As it should be. Car makers are engineering firms and should be ran by an engineer who gets it, not a business person who only knows how to cut costs.
