Opel Adds Affordable Easytronic 3.0 Automated Manual Gearbox To Karl, Adam, Corsa and Astra

Coming to support drivers who cannot afford the luxury of a fully automatic transmission, Opel has added the more affordable option of an automated manual gearbox on several models.

Named Easytronic 3.0, the new automated manual transmission is now offered on the Karl, Adam and Corsa family of small cars as well as the new Astra, which was recently crowned the 2016 European Car of the Year.

The gearbox is based on a manual and it comes with an automated gear-shifting system, billed as "affordable [and] efficient alternative to a conventional automatic transmission for small or compact cars". Compared to the previous automated manual transmissions, the Easytronic 3.0 is said to "impress with smoother gear shifts and reduced reaction times".

My only experience with an automated gear box is in Smart ForTwo which is really rough and a pretty slow shifting box. Hopefully this gear box is better.
Research is what I am doing when I don't know what I am doing.

Is this like the SMG in the older M3 (probably one or two generations ago)?

I find it interesting they are positioning it as the cost effective option so HOW expensive is a auto in EUROPE?
I recall SIAC GM was working on a AMT tranny in china and is this it or the Chinese one a duel clutch?

Re: Opel Adds Affordable Easytronic 3.0 Automated Manual Gearbox

Hopefully it's much smoother than other automated manuals? I've been sorry I went that route. If I didn't do so much of my driving in rush hour traffic, I'd get a manual. But since I do, it's just constant shift-clutch-shift-clutch, and that drove me away from wanting to own a manual. Sorry folks, but my next car will have a conventional automatic unless DCT transmissions improve greatly in smoothness.

Interesting, Opel says lower fuel consumption than manual five-speeds

The optional 6 speed automatic on the new Opel Astra is a 2,554 Euro( $2,834 ) option. And only a small percentage of buyers opt
for automatic transmissions here in Europe. My wife is spoiled with her imported US 2003 Honda Accord which of course was bought in CA
and we shipped it to Finland in 2003 when we moved here. We'll replace it soon and I'm ok with a manual, but she said no more manual transmissions. I do like the all new Astra Touring Wagon. I'd like it better if the 1.4 turbo had the six speed manual, but the wife makes
twice as much as I do, so she gets her way. :-(

Re: Opel Adds Affordable Easytronic 3.0 Automated Manual Gearbox

back in 2008 while in europe we rented a new Astra and had a odd transmission that was one of the converted manuals. the shifter always returned to the center position and confused the heck out me. accelerating from a stop was the slowest thing ever and scariest thing too. especially on a blind turn and a car comes out fast that you did not see. i actually found it shifted faster by using the +/- buttons rather than the auto feature. i actually had to put in in N and engage neural before engaging reverse. i cant remember how to put it in park. i think i put in in N and then used the parking brake lol

I really do not see how this system is cheaper than a real automatic transmission.

The Viva with a Easytronic costs $724 more to buy than a manual stick Viva car..

The Viva with Easytronic running costs are $410 more per year manual stick Viva x 13 years lifetime ownership = $5330 + $744 (optional extra Easytronic cost of the car when new)

Most Europeans naturally buy cars with a manual stick as they are cheaper to run on $9 EU gas prices. I don't think many Europeans will be interested in the Easytronic option to be honest because of the higher costs.

Anything is better than the Ford Fiesta rental I had last week with a DCT. I mean it was borderline dangerous how that car shifted a low speeds.

The original Easytronic had a dire reputation for reliability a couple of decades ago so hopefully this version is more robust.

Most manufacturers in Europe are introducing, or have already introduced, DCT automatics but Opel/Vauxhall and Fiat seem committed to the automated manual.

It's all down to how good, or bad, the electronics are - some of the best and worst DCTs are the same transmissions but with different electronics from different brands.

I have driven Toyota YARIS/ECHO's with those AMT trannies and as long as you are NOT in a HURRY it is fine but if you ARE in a hurry in gets maddeningly slow in shifting and the car does NOT move much faster

and on paper the AMT should be the cheapest and MOT efficient type of tranny out there as a manual is simpler to build then a "hydromatic" and AMT only adds a X-Y motor assy and a few sensors + a clutch actuator and under operation does NOT have the parasitic losses of the hydraulic pump of a "hydromatic" to auto box + is always direct connected to the engine without the torque converter slip

    2015 opel insignia 1.6 sidi

Re: Opel Adds Affordable Easytronic 3.0 Automated Manual Gearbox

last year i buy the 1.6 sidi Opel insignia with 6T45 A/T (+1500 euro for the A/T). Here in France the problem is the CO2 taxes. many people do not buy a/t because the car emits much more CO2 than a manual gearbox. The insignia 1.6 sidi emits 164 g/km co2. With this high co2 emission I had to pay 1600 euro additional taxes when i buy the car.
