    OFFICIAL: Opel Karl revealed

    Is this the Opel Karl?

An allegedly official image of the Opel Karl has surfaced the web, but the authenticity of the photo has not been confirmed.

The photo was uploaded earlier today by Auto Motor und Sport and someone from AutoBlog.nl was fast enough to download it before the German magazine removed it from their website. Even if it's not legit, this is probably a very accurate render of the real deal as it closely follows the design we have already seen in several spy shots with prototypes undergoing testing. It has short front and rear overhangs, prominent side creases along with big headlights & fog lights.

UPDATE: The official information on the Opel Karl has been announced, below:

Opel says Karl will cost less than 10,000 euros
    Christiaan Hetzner
    Automotive News Europe
    December 3, 2014

FRANKFURT -- Opel will launch its new entry-level Karl minicar next summer at a sticker price of less than 10,000 euros in Germany including tax.

Opel today released pictures and details of the Karl, which will also be sold by sister brand Vauxhall in the UK as the Viva.

The Karl completes the carmaker’s small car offering that includes the Adam minicar and Corsa subcompact. Opel aims to attract new customers to the brand that otherwise might buy a Citroen C1 or Hyundai i10.

"We haven’t had a car in that price range for a long time, and that is very important since it is something of a magic threshold. Many customers looking for a car in that class will not even consider a particular model if it costs over 10,000 euros," an Opel spokesman said.

The Karl, which will be built in South Korea and hit German Opel showrooms in June at the earliest, should also appeal to previous Chevrolet Spark owners shopping for a new value-oriented car that otherwise would have migrated to a non-GM brand.

    Re: Opel Karl revealed?

Doesn't look horrible, but there's certainly some mashing up of styling elements here.

This vehicle was already on the drawing board when GM made the decision to pull the plug on Chevrolet in Europe. It makes me wonder if this is actually what the next Aveo/Spark will look like and they just grafted an Opel/Vauxhall front end on the final product? Logistically that would make a lot of sense, especially since there would be virtually no overlap between the brands in world markets (with the exception of Eastern Europe/Russia).

No. There would be no need. This is supposed to be the first in a raft of "cheap" Opel/Vauxhall products that will fill the bottom of their lineup now that Chevrolet has been killed off in Europe. Once Chevrolet was euthanized, GM Europe (now rechristened as the Opel Group) made the decision to green light such products in order to (re)capture any lost volume. The hope was to set the lower end of the new Opel/Vauxhall range to take on Dacia-esque products (which was Chevrolet's original mission in Europe).

In any event, the Karl/Viva doesn't need to come to the US (or China) as a Buick since Chevrolet already exists in both markets and has this particular consumer-segment covered.

If an eventual B-segment Opel product comes to the US market as a Buick, it's likely to be the more-upscale and competent Opel Corsa (and probably the next generation, rather than the current one).

On another note: I don't know how selling cheap cars under the same umbrella will ultimately affect Opel/Vauxhall's brand-awareness, or if it will dilute their now-improving image, but the decision was made. Personally, I still think that Chevrolet should have been allowed to continue in the market, and just reposition it as a true-alternative to Dacia, Kia, Hyundai, Perodua, etc (rather than permit the price-creep/feature-creep that ultimately made Chevy cars nearly as expensive as their Opel/Vauxhall corporate cousins).

Failing that, I still wonder if they shouldn't have just sold their cheaper cars as Vauxhalls in all European markets. This would have meant reintroducing the Opel brand in the UK, but it would have insulated the Opel brand's improving image and allowed an "adjustment period" for consumers to get used to the rebranded "Opel by Vauxhall" cars to catch on in the UK market.

At the very least it would finally end the Opel/Vauxhall branding schism and brought some rationality to the Group. But that's just my opinion.

There was a "reveal" of it's sibling the Vauxhall Viva back in May http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/vauxhal...ures-spy-shots - that may have just been a rendering but the licence plate makes mer think it isn't - it's a registration often used by Vauxhall for launch models.

The Chevrolet Spark, Opel Karl and Vauxhall Viva share the same platform - is it confirmed that the Spark will share the Opel/Vauxhall bodywork ?

I like it, you can definitely see that it's an evolution of the previous. It's pretty unoffensive, but then again, it's a city car.

I'd like to see it made up in Chevy guise.

Rear 3/4 is nice, but that nose looks like a 6 year old Corsa or Agila (good eye, ausrutherford). Overall it's probably on track to land smack dab in the middle of the pack.
