New Astra for the Racetrack: Opel Strengthens Customer Racing

Opel developing a racing car for the 2016 TCR International Series

Rüsselsheim. Opel is expanding its activities in customer touring car racing. Based on the new Astra, which will celebrate its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) this September, the motorsports division of the Rüsselsheim-based carmaker is developing a touring car in accordance with the current regulations of the TCR series for national and international customer racing.

The TCR series, inaugurated in 2015, is based on a three-pillar concept that includes national and continental championships along with the global TCR International Series – all of which have exactly the same technical regulations. Therefore, a TCR vehicle can be used worldwide without undergoing any technical modifications. The two-liter turbo-charged engines have an output of 330 hp and maximum torque of 410 Nm.

“Touring car racing has always been an important part of Opel. The philosophy of the new TCR series corresponds to our idea of customer racing. We want to give ambitious privately owned teams a platform for exciting sport at reasonable costs,” said Opel Group CMO Tina Müller.

The Opel Astra TCR is currently under development and the technical specifications will be announced at a later date. Testing of the new customer sports touring car is set to start in October.

It's not only about racing. Remember the Astra OPC Cup? Maybe we also see here some design cues for the upcoming 5-door OPC?

    Astra OPC Cup

Can't see an Astra coming anywhere but the back of the field in something like Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Touring Car Championship.

MMmm a owners racing series limited to 330 HP with all that torque steer, that's as scary it will ever get in a FWD car. I hope nobody gets hurt, it sound fun though a real thrill adrenalin rush pushing a FWD car to its absolute limit a bit like jumping out a plane and your parachute won't open type of rush.

The day an Opel wins DTM will be the day l will buy an Opel.

About time. You have been missed. Chevrolet ran well, but really isn't relevant now. Would like to see a Vauxhall version of this in BTCC.

Would love Vauxhall to win BTCC it would push them to No1 best selling brand spot in the UK if they did. Sign up Plato before he retires.

Yes, it is a shame that the road legal version, the Astra Extreme, wasn't green lighted for production.

I second the motion. I also am right there with ya sfbreh, it is sexy. It's a real looker IMO and would make Buick proud I think.

It does. Opel separated GTC from Astra family in German Konfigurator calling it only GTC from now on since Astra K was introduced.

Guess I'm in the minority. I think this would make a great Chevrolet. Ford Focus RS competitor....

So are you saying... there will be a non-Astra GTC?

    Get hype?
