“Honorary Golden Steering Wheel 2016” for GM Chairman & CEO Mary Barra

    Opel Press Release
    2016-11-09

    - Role model: GM Chairman & CEO Barra leads a forward-looking corporate culture with the customer at the center
    - Premiere: First honorary award after 16 “Golden Steering Wheel“ trophies for Opel
    - Gala: Opel Group CEO Dr. Neumann and VP Communications Willems with Mary Barra in Berlin

Rüsselsheim/Berlin. A big honor for General Motors and Opel: at yesterday evening’s Bild am Sonntag and Auto Bild’s “Golden Steering Wheel” awards ceremony in Berlin the spotlight was not on a car, it was on GM Chairman & CEO Mary Barra. She was awarded the “Honorary Golden Steering Wheel 2016” for her tireless work for GM and Opel.

The automotive industry’s “Honorary Oscar” went to her because: “Mary Barra is responsible for the renaissance of General Motors. She has led the company into the future by establishing a new corporate culture, advancing trend-setting models and entering innovative business areas for GM. In the process, Opel was always part of her equation and the brand’s upward trend in the last years is due not least thanks to her”.

Barra accepted the award in the presence of Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann and Vice President Communications Johan Willems. “Technology leadership has been at the core of the Opel brand since it was founded in 1862, and it continues to drive the company today,” said Barra. “General Motors and Opel are working together to define and lead the future of personal mobility, in Germany, in Europe and around the world.”

Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann added, “We are proud to have a leader like Mary Barra at the helm at General Motors. She has a clear vision for GM that we are realizing together and that has played a key role in getting Opel back on the track to success.”

Yesterday’s award ceremony was also a premiere for all of the employees of Opel and GM. After the new Astra became the 16th Opel model since 1978 to win the “Golden Steering Wheel” last year, this was the first time an executive from the company was granted the “Honorary Steering Wheel”. The award is granted by the two newspapers Bild am Sonntag and Auto Bild. A jury made up of readers, experts and celebrities chooses the year’s award-winners and newcomers.

In a market where everyone else seems to be doubling down on what has worked in the past, it isn't incredibly hard to stand out. Congrats to her and GM nonetheless. The current team has done a good job of turning around the profitability of the company.

Well, well, well now don't she just look proud. Ha proud Mary even. Good for her because she has done wonders for GM IMO.

laughable, when is she going to do anything for other GM brands in Europe? Is she head of just one GM brand? I thought she was in charge of the whole corporation.

Opel is GM's best (only?) shot at a meaningful Western European presence for the foreseeable future.

And that's a reason to treat Cadillac/Corvette like a complete shi.t unworthy of any support? This was not an answer to my question. Tell this those who own other GM brands in Europe and have problems with basic maintenance of their cars and have to deal with near-zero quality service, no customer care etc. Maybe they should buy Opel instead of Cadillac. At least they will get OnStar! Mary Barra = Hillary Clinton of auto business.

for opeL? shes there because she looks cute like sallie field. Well shes got an MBA from Stanford so thats OK but it was sponsored by GM so that makes it worth MUCH less- I got into the Stanford MBA program without help from an employer! The last good GM CEO was probably Sloan. I dont trust her or the bozos she installed at Caddy

Service/repair facilities for other GM brands in Europe are in proportion to sales levels - when Chevrolet withdrew mainstream models from Europe, servicing/repair facilities were integrated with Opel (and Vauxhall in the UK) to provide ongoing support to customers - Cadillac, Camaro and Corvette sales in Europe total less than a European ultra-luxury brand so it's unreasonable to expect many service/repair outlets.

Business models vary around the world - Lexus soon found out they have to use a different model in Europe to the one they use in the US - maybe Cadillac never learnt that.
