GM drops RHD Insignia Country Tourer

Once again, it seems that RHD is just too difficult for GM.

    http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/sc...tourer-axed-uk

The previous 2.0 CDTi engine was engineered for RHD+4wd but it's apparently too expensive to re-engineer the new 2.0 "Whisper" diesel.

I have to conclude that GM has descended to the capability of a Third World car maker - I can't imagine why FCA wants a merger!

    Rupert,

Maybe its due to the fact that the next version of the Insignia appears in 2017 and it was too
late in the product development cycle?

That is what GM's excuse will be this time.....Still I can't believe this happened...

    Ken

The new "Whisper" engine has been fitted to LHD/4WD and both RHD/2WD and LHD/2WD versions so I presume some component positional conflict prevents it's installation in RHD/4WD.

But since the new engine is merely an evolution of the previous 2.0CDTi which was available in RHD/4WD, it's incompetence if they "forgot" the RHD requirement - this is most unlike Opel - maybe they involved Americans!

Application of a new diesels for the old model may be too costly. I am absolutely sure the next generation will get all variants with this engine.

Don't exaggerate. This is quite a reasonable decision, considering that the next generation will be released next year.

GM may as well shut up shop in RHD countries.

Would have been a great Adventra, although I don't think it comes with any petrol engines which could be a problem for some in Aus/NZ. Subaru seems to do well with the Outback with March sales at 1180 in Australia. I much prefer the Outback, Allroad, Scout type vehicles to proper SUV's.

Re: GM drops RHD Insignia Country Tourer

Opel are very careful with the next gen Insignia, they don't want to spend too much money, the development budget is very very tight. This part of the market is dead, buyers have moved to the premium brands - too bad GM got rid of SAAB.

Just look at the sales of the new Ford Mondeo last month in its biggest European market, Germany: 1773. This compares to 1562 of the "old" Insignia sales (Passat: 6896, Merc C class: 4954, Audi A4: 4051, Audi A6: 3595, BMW 3: 3325, Merc E class: 2501, BMW 5: 2329). Hence why Opel wanted the Elizabeth plant closed so badly, they desperately need every sale they can get.

So Opel is abandoning the RHD lifted 4wd estate market, for UK and Australia, and leaving it to Skoda Octavia Scout and Skoda Superb Scout - it's a given that volumes will go down if you don't make cars for that market sector !
