General Motors is preparing to push its Super Cruise driver-assist tech to more of its brands in the coming model years. For now, though, the hands-free driving feature is exclusive to Cadillac. The setup relies on regularly updated high-definition maps, which work with the adaptive cruise control and lane-centering self-steering functions to accurately locate and place a so-equipped vehicle on more than 200,000 miles of Super Cruise-friendly highways with little-to-no driver interaction required. Additionally, an interior-mounted camera monitors the driver's attention as a safeguard to ensure the individual behind the wheel can take control of the car if necessary. And aside from the tech's upfront cost, using it is free—for a time.

Somewhere along the line either I forgot or never knew Super Cruise is ultimately a paid subscription service. They expect people to pay a premium for the option and then have to pay a monthly fee to use it? I'm not liking that.

I get that there are a lot of products that you pay top dollar for and then have to pay a monthly fee, such as a smartphone. I know GM has to keep the maps updated, etc., which costs money, but something just doesn't sit well with me on this one....

Just like the BS games they play with OnStar.

Screw that. I'm not paying a subscription service for something like this, on top of the up front costs. Its not worth it. Same reason why I refuse to pay for onstar.

So what happens when GM no longer supports your version of Super Cruise? Do you now have an expensive option that is useless? That happened to me with OnStar, though at least you don't have to pay for the equipment (or at least it's wrapped in with the overall cost of the car so you just don't see it).

I learned about OnStar when I got locked out once and tried to get them to let me in.

No pay, no help. They actually told me to push the button to activate it, and then they could help. As if I could, from the outside of my HHR...

I ended up getting a guy with a slim jim to get in.

Some OTA services are extra. Then again, once can always drive their Cadillac

If I'm buying a pre-owned vehicle with any option that requires a subscription, that option has a value of zero.
I play the hardest of hardball when it comes to stuff like this.

In the past it was never really a thing because this was always the case with the likes of OnStar and XM.
But now we're talking about things that cost real money.

What ever came of that? I saw that there was some pushback about this...did Tesla cave and activate AP on 2nd hand Teslas?

    I would prefer something like:
    1. Cadillac and Hummer have an up-front premium price for SuperCruise and no subscription.
    2. Chevrolet, GMC, Buick etc. have a reduced up-front price and monthly subscription. Ideally, no long-term commitments and no activation/cancellation fees so people can activate the service on a monthly basis only when they need it.

This would differentiate the high-end offering and still spread the cost of the system development and integration over a wider base.

Unfortunately, this is quite likely with SuperCruise. The current version of SuperCruise that relies on pre-mapped LiDAR is a stopgap until the system being developed by Cruise gets deployed which, like Tesla's system, does not require pre-mapping. At that point GM will have little incentive to keep updating the maps for a system no longer on sale (perhaps the subscriptions will help extend the period the maps will be kept updated).

As far as I know, that only happened in limited cases on cars that were sold on auction or were salvaged etc., right? Other than that, as far as I know, used cars with AP are priced higher (as is the case with any expensive option) but there's not need for the new owner to re-activate or pay anything else extra.
