Exclusive: Photos Show the Wilder Cadillac CT5-V Will Have a Manual Transmission
What Cadillac's calling the "ultra-performance" CT5-V will have a proper stick shift.

    The Drive

The 2020 Cadillac CT5-V is... different. And that's not a bad thing! Cadillac's decision to spread the V performance nameplate around and make more balanced versions of earth-rending monsters like the 640-horsepower CTS-V resulted in a damn fine car, even if it's got a twin-turbo V-6 in lieu of a supercharged V-8. But we've known all along that Cadillac was planning on bringing the thunder back in a faster, more track-capable model—and exclusive photos obtained by The Drive show this unnamed CT5-V performance variant will have a manual transmission.

These four pictures—two showing the rear of the car, and two showing the interior—were taken last week by a source at a GM facility. Anonymous rumors of the stick-shift CT5-V flagship popped up earlier this year, but this marks the first concrete proof that Cadillac is holding on to the manual transmission. Even more exciting: it's reportedly connected to a V-8 engine, backed up by spy video clips in which a distinct eight-cylinder soundtrack can be heard.

2021 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing Has Manual Transmission Option, Corvette GT2 Seats
    10 Mar 2020
    by Mircea Panait
    autoevolution.com

The rumors were true, ladies and gents! Due to a lack of funding, Cadillac plans on reviving the CTS-V with the CT5-V Blackwing in two ways. Firstly, the LT4 supercharged V8 from the Corvette Z06 and Camaro ZL1 will return. Secondly, the six-speed manual will come back as well.

The CT5-V Blackwing with the three-pedal setup is likely to sell in fewer numbers than the 10-speed automatic model, but on the other hand, Cadillac needs an enthusiast option like the six-speeder. The CT4-V Blackwing will match the six- and 10-speed transmissions with the 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 (the LF4) of the ATS-V, which goes to show that Cadillac isn’t up to snuff.

Re-packaging old powerplants in new shells underpinned by the Alpha 2 vehicle architecture is disappointing in a way, but on the other hand, what did you expect from an SUV-driven market like the United States? The XT series and Escalade will outsell both sedans, and as it happens, sport utility vehicles are far more profitable than the three-box body style of yesterday.

I don't think it's disappointing at all to have old engines used in "new" platforms especially when those engines are freaking rock stars by all accounts. Crazy to just throw them away.

Now, watch the CT5-V Blackwing be $85,000.

I'm weird,as I'd like to see something a little different, the 500hp LT2 motor out of the base C8 would be perfect for the CT5-V IMO at a sub $60k base price.

This was my first choice for the ultimate V but I can’t be mad at 640hp mated to a manual trans.

I'm not mad about 640hp either. The lighter LT2 would give it almost perfect balance, along w/ high 3 to low 4s 60 and would be a more purist offering along the lines of the now defunct Chevy SS which was arguably GMs best performance sedan ever.

That would be a return to gen 1 V status and would be great.

You'd be hard pressed to get a Camaro optioned up to a Cadillac's standard for much less. I don't see these cars being much below $69,995 and topping out near $90K fully optioned. I mean, they are replacing a 6-figure CTS-V.

Perhaps they need to add another variant to bridge the gap between regular ‘domesticated’ V and the full on fire breathing version?

Agreed, the base CTS-V gen II was around 65 as I recall and usually went over 70. If they do in fact go with the Z06 engine, they pretty much have to price it near Z06 pricing which start at 80 I think. I suspect 85K to start and 105K loaded to the gills.

IF they’re not going to use BLACKWING then how about CT5-V ULTRA.

Btw. MAXX As suggested by one of the Car magazines sounds like crap.

I just clicked on the link to that article, and in response to questions from The Drive about these vehicles Cadillac actually used the word ULTRA (“The Ultra performance variants...”) so perhaps it will be CT4/5-V Ultra?
