GM adding 1,200 jobs to raise output of crossovers, Cadillac sedans

General Motors on Friday said it will add 1,200 jobs at two plants in Lansing, Mich., to increase production of the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and a pair of new Cadillac sedans.

GM plans to add 800 workers for a third daily shift at the Lansing-Delta Township crossover plant and 400 jobs to bring back the second shift at Lansing-Grand River Assembly, which makes the Cadillac CT4 and CT5. The new shifts will begin in the second quarter, GM said.

The new jobs will come about three years after the Delta Township plant eliminated its third shift and after running the Grand River plant on one shift for a little more than a year.

GM's contract with the UAW, ratified in October, includes a commitment to create or retain 5,000 jobs at the automaker's Delta Township and Spring Hill, Tenn., plants with investments totaling $1 billion. The labor contract doesn't specifically call for new jobs at Lansing-Grand River, which makes the Chevrolet Camaro in addition to the Cadillac sedans.

I hope this is a sign of strong demand for the Cadillacs. Or is it just ramp-up for a new model?

In the past, I've had a 5th gen Camaro, a CTS sedan and coupe, two 3rd gen Firebird Formulas, a convertible 4th gen Trans Am, a Reatta, a couple of Monte Carlos, an Avenger coupe, a couple of Cavalier hatchbacks, a Saturn SC1, and a Cherokee.

The CT5 is now in dealerships, does this suggest they're selling well and thus GM is increasing production? Or is this a decision that was actually made months ago? I'm not in the business, so I don't know how fast information flows from dealers back to manufacturers.

Plus maybe the cheaper V8 Camaro is selling well, I hope so...

GM to Add More Than 1,200 Jobs at Lansing Area Assembly Plants

GM to Add More Than 1,200 Jobs at Lansing Area Assembly Plants
    General Motors
    Febuary 28, 2020

LANSING, Mich. — General Motors is adding more than 1,200 jobs at its Lansing manufacturing operations to meet customer demand for popular mid-size SUVs and to support the launch of two all-new Cadillac sedans.

Lansing Grand River Assembly will add a second shift in General Assembly, resulting in the plant adding almost 400 employees to support the launch of the Cadillac CT4 and CT5.

Lansing Delta Township Assembly will add a third shift to support production of its popular Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave. Approximately 800 employees will be added.

“We are excited to provide these opportunities in Lansing,” said Phil Kienle, vice president, GM North American Manufacturing and Labor Relations. “Our team members have proven experience in building high-quality vehicles and are well-prepared to meet the needs of our customers. This is great news for our manufacturing sites as well as the Lansing community.”

Since 2015, GM has invested more than $1 billion into Lansing manufacturing. This includes the $36 million investment at Lansing Delta Township last year for future mid-size SUV production, as well as the $175 million investment at Lansing Grand River in 2018 to modernize tooling and equipment for the all-new Cadillac CT4 and CT5.

Both shift additions will be operational in the second quarter of 2020.

Didn't GM add a third shift to LGR in 2016 (mainly for forecasted Camaro "demand"), only to discontinue the third shift and layoff 850 people in 2017 because of lackluster demand for ATS, CTS and Camaro?

Will be very interesting to see sales numbers for these new Cadillac sedans going forward.

    LGR:
Regarding past efforts; if it is anything like the 3 previous times; ATS addition, New CTS and then Alpha Camaro, the extra shift lasted about 6 months, they built an extra years worth of cars and then they dialed it back a shift.

I can't predict the future, but they do need to build inventory, and this time it is going from 1 to 2 (and presumably) back to 1 shift, where before the added shift was the 3rd shift.

    DELTA:
I am surprised by this, not sure how or why GM needs more Traverse and Enclave volume, GM moved the Acadia to Spring Hill, Blazer's pumping out of Mexico like mad.

Is the Traverse going to be the new "fleet queen"? (SPECULATION: Cancel Malibu and move XT4 to Delta Plant and close Kansas City)?

Better than importing crap from S. Korea and China; good for Michigan, I just hope it sticks.

Would make sense that would be made in Spring Hill with the Acadia/XT5 or Ramos with the Blazer.

    Here is another thought............................
