2020 Cadillac XT4 Review: Comfortable And Modern

The XT4 is one of the most unique and sharp looking subcompact luxury crossovers on the market today. If appearances were the definition of a brand’s success, the XT4 would push Cadillac to the top of the sales list, but there’s a lot more to consider than skin-deep beauty. The XT4’s price tag and brand name put it squarely in competition with heavy-hitters like the Acura RDX, Audi Q3, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLA Class. How well does the American stand up? Let’s take a closer look.

There’s no denying it, the XT4 looks great. Its compact dimensions do wonders to accent the sharp and modern styling, which might look austere and stretched on a bigger shape. The littlest Cadillac crossover captures many of the design touches of its larger siblings and does so gracefully. The XT4’s large grille and vertical LED running lights are prominently featured, but everything is proportionate and in balance.

Inside, the clean, modern design continues. A large digital display and an 8-inch infotainment screen are fit neatly into the dash, and only a few buttons line the underside of the screen. The most cluttered part of the XT4’s interior is the steering wheel, which is full of buttons and controls.

The XT4 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that produces 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels or all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic gearbox. That combination is good enough to make the XT4 feel lively in town and provides enough grunt to pull quickly into traffic, but it’s not potent enough to make the crossover feel legitimately fast.

I like the XT4, definitely a homerun as far as styling, inside and out. My one caveat is I do notice it's suspension isn't as sophisticated as the Alpha chassis. If it had that level of sophistication the XT4 would be a CUV that I'd be interested in for my own vehicle. But on the good side, my wife is interested in replacing her Grand Cherokee with an XT4!

Well, the XT4 Sport does have available active sport suspension, so that might improve the experience.

Usually, when I talk about an SUV being attractive it’s qualified with “for an SUV.” But the XT4 is just beautiful with no qualifications. If I were in the market for an SUV, I’d get it.

I do wish they would drop that 2.7T in there, though.

My problem with the XT4 is the unfinished underside of the vehicle. You can see uncadillac things hanging there.
It’s like seeing wrinkly bolls hanging out of a nice pair of pants...
Cadillac should pay attention to those small details.
It’s also lack of details that let them down with suspension. The left that last tightening up undone. They polished and forgot the shine

I don't know that it's the sportiness as much as overall sophistication in how it handles road imperfections, etc.. The Alpha is a special chassis imparting it's ride with a fluidity that normal chassis just don't have, I don't feel that specialness in the XT4. I still love it - but GM needs to get that magic in all Cadillac models.

Yes! 2.7 w/10 speed will be a winner! I wonder if it will fit?

The missus likes that orange metallic color - which I think it looks fantastic in! Though it's hard to find, dealers don't stock many in that color.

I think it has more to do with if GM/Cadillac wants to spend the money to develop a version that’ll go into a transverse application. Is the 10 speed engineered for transverse, or just longitudinal? It’s pretty clear that beyond V Series, Corvette and Camaro, GM doesn’t have any interest in making performance cars/suv’s.

Agreed, I very much doubt we will see a performance XT4. But, I'm curious if the potential is even there - what are the limitations of the chassis and the likely engine (2.7 seems like the most likely candidate), is there space for fancy MRC shocks and AWD, etc.. Just dreaming

Definitely a nice ride and the press is warming to it! I'm hoping the missus chooses the XT4! She's also thinking about the X2 and a Volvo (I forget which one, similar size to the XT4).
