    Re: Cadillac House to Close

Cadillac moved to New York City in 2014. The reason then was: Cadillac wanted to be an international auto company regarded as an equal to Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, not just to Lincoln. Cadillac was getting closer each year.
..was getting closer..so is it there yet. Did they drop that goal? Are they going against Lincoln, Genesis..or something more exotic...like Aurus Senat

    Re: Cadillac House to Close

I’m convinced that Cadillac no longer has an easily identifiable brand identity.

The company has spent the last two decades changing course so often, and confusing its customers (and potential customers), that its brand identity is a mess.

At one point, it even tried abandoning its long-term customers for the hipster crowd. Didn’t work.

Can anyone tell me what Cadillac stands for today? When you hear the word, Cadillac, what comes to mind?

    Re: Cadillac House to Close

The one consistency in product at Cadillac in recent years has been a crossover that is the darling of the female real estate broker community and the Escalade, a vehicle which needs no introduction. Cadillac is fleshing out that lineup by building small and large sizes of the XT5 right now, and this side of the business is where the bulk of Cadillac sales volume and their profit comes from. Essentially, Escalade and the crossovers are Cadillac. The Soho experiment and the Alpha/Omega platform cars are just people playing with the money that Escalade and XT5/SRX have made.

From 1997 when the Catera debuted, until about 2017, I do think Cadillac had a brand identity.

It was trying to tell the world that it was becoming more youthful, more athletic, and more exciting.

In some part, it succeeded. The Catera wasn't THAT bad, just underpowered. The CTS, first with the 3.2, then the 3.6, then the V, showed Cadillac making incremental improvements.
The 2nd gen CTS built upon those, taking both the interior and the performance of the car to the next level. It could now hang with the Germans.

This is where I think they made their wrong turn. They listened to critics. "Oh yes, it's as fast as an M5, but it's unrefined and its plasticy and don't you think that bulging hood is gawdy?" They took some of that American verve out of it when it went Alpha to appease an audience that would never buy Cadillac anyway.

JdN was brought in. I think his vision was good. He clearly wanted to take Cadillac upscale. I think he also realized that to pull it off, he'd have to spend a ton of money, make some 'paper changes' to appease the press, and focus on crossovers to fund it all. I don't know where the blame falls on why the crossovers were so slow in coming. If that falls on JdN then I agree with him being let go. Otherwise, his plans were just starting to come into focus, and he should have been allowed to follow through.

I'm not sure what it stands for today. We just transitioned from "Autobahn destroyers" to "crossovers making money". Are we now heading towards EVs? Frankly I don't care which one they pick, but I hope they stick with one. If they put their money behind luxury EVs and out do everyone else, at least that will be an identity.

I believe Barra gave JdN $12B for the transformation. Can anyone take a rough guess at how much of that they burned through in the past few years?

I don’t know, but it was at least 376,000 in 2018.

I think the more relevant question here is does that projection still matter? Cadillac design ad marketing direction is dramatically different now than it was when that goal was set.

The core of Cadillac is so deeply entwined in GM, that they would need to be exponentially bigger to run independently.

If we look at where Cadillac has done well, its China, but on who's back did that happen? GM's............

Cadillac is doomed with GM, but would be worse-off without.......................

About every 4 years the music stops and a new clown gets to run the circus; should lead the presentation with this; everytime. Maybe throw-in a couple-three 180's in there for good measure.

Caddy buyers skipped the $87k CTSV's and went for $100k P100 Teslas that dont need money in the tank every week.....and they run 10.90 1/4 miles w same fake wood trim inside and a Ipad dash. Havnt seen any Tesla TV PRINT ads either. Here in LA ive seen 2 new CTSVs in the past year....Seen 10,000 Model S P100's.

This is sad because Cadillac House could have been used to hold Fashion Week or even been used as a Cadillac Museum of sorts. Someone over at GM and/or Cadillac isn't thinking AGAIN...

People buying cars in that price range probably aren't all that concerned about buying a tank of gas. But for the $13K saved on a CTS-V in your hypothetical sale, those people could have bought what, 250 tanks of gas? That's years of gas for most people.

But such usage has nothing to do with Cadillac or automobiles at all. Pretty much why moving Cadillac's marketing to NYC made no sense. NYC itself has no real connection with the auto industry.

If the building would be better used for fashion shows or museums, great. But sell it, and let someone else play those games.

It's all about marketing, you don't need to connect the city with the industry, you need to connect your product to a buyer, and to that extent, your luxury product with wealthy buyers.

They don't own the building, they leased the space, and are looking to either sublet or skip out on the lease now.

    Re: Cadillac House to Close

I don't think Cadillac needs to leave Detroit. No matter where they put the HQ, Detroit is still in command. In this day and age, moving to NYC might have moved Cadillac management physically away from GM management, but it did not in any way lessen GM's control of the brand.

I think NYC was a poor choice. Obviously there's tons of cars there, a good chunk of them often sitting in stalled traffic. But NYC, while being the most important or second most important city in the US in terms of culture is not a what comes to mind when it comes to automobiles. I think a lot of people associate it with traffic jams and dread the thought of having to drive there.

The coffee house was irrelevant no matter where they would put it.

If they wanted a new HQ for image reasons, I think Dallas would have been a better choice. It's a modern cities friendly to cars. Texas is good Cadillac territory.

IMHO the "firing" of JDN was the big blow to CADDY and GM CORP bringing CADDY back in the FOLD
and under GM's wings CHEVROLET pickups will ALWAYS be #1 as they pay the bills and everything else is a distraction OR BONUS sales as LONG is it does NOT cost the bottomline
JDN KNEW that CADDY as a BRAND is worthless right now as it has LITTLE presence and a MIXED UP product "identity" the cadillac house and "painthead" dude while "OFF script BUT if used properly would get the BRAND CADDY out there and with the "RIGHT" product
but POST JDN and all the return HOME moves IMHO shows GM has NO plans beyond cash cow products and CADDY having NO IDENTITY and DIRECTION

    +1
Also, Cadillac's most prestigious vehicle model available for retail sale is assembled at GM's Arlington Assembly plant, located between Dallas and Fort Worth.
