It's funny but we actually lost sales to people who were looking for an SRX but purchased something else because they couldn't find the SRX on Cadillac's website. Sure, we would tell the confused shoppers about the name change but there were people who we never got to talk to until it was too late.

Am I wrong in thinking that the CT4's starting price is very similar to
    the 2013 ATS?

Seven years later, Cadillac seems to have appropriate pricing.

Maybe GM lessened the interior volume or just the number of the CT-4 mind tricking people into thinking the CT-4 is in a lower class level (the A3 and A Class) while retaining the exterior dimensions the of the CT-4's predecessor the ATS,which was a 3Series /C-Class competitor to make the CT-4 look like it was a greater value by making it appear you were getting more in a lower class level?

We all know these days that it isn't the exterior dimensions that classify a vehicle as compact,mid-size or full-size,it's the interior volume.

So theoretically if DannyNG's Sonic has more interior volume than a Rolls Royce Betanyaga it could be considered a competitor of that vehicle at a price point far far cheaper than the class it's competing in.

I'll probably make some revisions to this post later...But here is the rough idea for now.

I noticed that too - I was thinking the pricing was very similar to my '13 ATS, though I'll have to see the content at specific price points.

Totally agree. GM can say that this car competes against whatever it wants. But CT4 is the same size as before. Cars compete against cars of the same size. It's competition for the 3/C. By pricing it as they have, maybe it's the budget competition to the 3/C, but that is the comparison that people will make.

It's possible that people in the market for something smaller will look at the Cadillac and see that they can get a bigger car for the same price. Fine. But the bulk of the takers of this car won't be comparing it to something a class smaller.

Considering how sedan sales are plummeting and Cadillac is so far behind now, maybe being the budget alternative isn't a bad strategy. Bragging about ATP is pretty silly when sales levels are at ATS or CTS numbers. No way that recoups development costs. Profits may not be great (or even exist) if they move more volume via lower costs, but if they still want to be in the sedan game, this may be the only strategy. Even BMW is talking about cutting models. Of course, pricing Cadillac this low seems to eliminate the need for cars from Buick or Chevrolet, but Buick will soon be out of the car business and Chevy is cutting way back.

jpd80 and BlackGTP are right on the mark! Here's the press release for 2013 Cadillac ATS:

2013 Cadillac ATS Priced from $33,990

Note that the $33,990 price applied to the 2.5L ATS Standard model, not the 2.0T Standard. The latter was priced at $35,795.

    Feature enhancements for 2020 CT4 Luxury ($33,990 in 2019 dollars) versus 2013 ATS 2.5L Standard ($33,990 in 2012 dollars):
    • 237 hp 2.0L turbo engine (versus 200 hp 2.5L engine)
    • 8-speed automatic transmission (versus 6-speed)
    • Turn signal indicator in exterior mirror housing
    • LED headlamps

The issue here isn't which class its defined in. The issue is that they are a day late and a dollar short.

As someone already says, the CT4 competitors are already out and anyone looking to buy in that class (whatever it is) is a small population. By the time we see them in the streets (if we do), most potential CT4 buyers would have already purchased something else.

It's pointless to try to carve out a slice of a pie when your 3 hours late to the party.

Yeah, but six years (almost 7 years) of inflation means that’s a big price reduction. And that was also consistent with the pricing of the 3 series at the time.
