Camaro Designer Shrugs Off Styling Controversy

    https://leftlanenews.com/chevrolet/c...isses-critics/

Former General Motors design director Tom Peters is confident his team did the best job possible when forming the sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro's exterior design.

The Camaro has been losing ground against the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger in recent years. Some critics have blamed the Camaro's exterior design for slumping sales.

The controversy peaked when the Camaro was refreshed in 2019, adding a massive grille (pictured) that some found objectionable. The company quickly changed course, however, and hastily readied another refresh for 2020 that adopted the more well-received front styling of an SS show car created for SEMA.

Speaking to Muscle Cars and Trucks, Peters said he would not change a single thing in hindsight, despite lackluster sales.

"We wanted to add more sculpture, more flavor, and more unique shape," he said, referring to the sixth-generation model.

Camaro sales slid to 24,516 units in the first half of the year, while the Mustang dropped to 38,542 deliveries and the Challenger fell by 23 percent to 28,668 units. As the numbers show, all three pony cars are experiencing waning demand so far this year.

Typical GM attitude. The idiots will buy whatever we sell them ! Well, this time it backfired. Nice interior, amazing engineering, ****ty exterior. And if you don't turn your head to look back at your car in the parking lot at least once, you bought the wrong car.

"Former General Motors design director Tom Peters is confident his team did the best job possible when forming the sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro's exterior design."
Tom Peters - if this is your best, then you are not the right man for the job.

The '16-'18s weren't bad looking, they were actually pretty freaking nice, unusable...but nice. The '19 SS, I don't care what anyone thinks...they looked flat out bad, so bad...that it was corrected in one MY. You never see a refresh after one year unless something went horribly wrong and in the case of the '19 SS yeah something went horribly wrong:

One thing I'd keep and double down on is that lovely Camry "grille." Or whatever they call it. Catfish.

He can fabricate anything he wants--he's the former design director not current.

Anyway, from the Camaro to the Mustang and Challenger, these Gen X'er models aged themselves out (Gen X'ers requirements and balance sheet changed and the styling for these cars haven't drastically changed for some time now--except for Mustang, but, even that is getting long in the tooth) and priced themselves out so that Millennials can no longer purchase something that for them is a marginal decision and for Baby Boomers too far out for SOME of them (just purchase a Corvette instead)...

Between this guy's "former" status and the receding wave of this market, it really just doesn't matter...

It's worth remembering that Mr. Peters was also responsible for the very successful 5th Generation car.

Personally think the new Camaro is the best looking pony car available. It's the only one that turns my head every time I see one. I do think that refresh looked awful where they placed the Chevy emblem, good that they fixed it quickly though.

I may be in the minority but I feel the '16-'18 styling is boldly aggressive. I ENJOY my pair every single day!!

The Manta Ray "mouth flaps" are a ridiculous look. But in general I don't dislike the styling, I dislike the packaging. If you want bigger sales, the car has to be more useful to more people. Honestly, as nice as it might be, not everybody can afford the 700 hp, $70,000 version. That's what the Corvette is for.

But the back seat really can't be used at all, and the trunk is entirely too small. On top of that, the trunk opening makes it hard to use what little trunk space there is!

I've heard "them" say that they designed the trunk to accommodate a set of golf clubs. But I have been to the Chevy dealer with my clubs. No, they do NOT fit.
