Sunset of the sedan: 2019 chevrolet blazer vs. Chevy impala

    "Longer! Lower! Wider!"

For decades, those three words triggered fever dreams of speed, style, and, with a wink, an extra sprinkle of sexiness. In 1965, they helped talk 1 million Americans into the Chevrolet Impala, which remains the single biggest-selling passenger car this country has ever known. But walk into a Ford showroom next year, and you might have trouble spotting its last remaining "car"—the iconic Mustang—amid a Stonehenge of towering crossovers, SUVs, and trucks. There will be no sedans at all down the street at the Chrysler showroom, and by late next year, the history book will also snap shut on that onetime king of American sedans—the iconic Impala.

    What the heck has happened?

That was an interesting take, I found this sentence of note referring to the ride height of SUV's
Although the reasons for it have changed since 1896, the height of the American automobile is, nevertheless, back where it started.

Tell you what the heck has happened? America getting FATTER and cars are getting smaller! Getting harder and harder to fit behind the steering wheel in these midget cars. If your older with knee problems or back issues car is definitely not for you. Same money or less expensive a consumer will find an SUV that's right for them. They can produce more and keep cost down because this is what majority of America wants . That's until gas prices hit $4 a gallon then bring out the Honda ****vic I fit again! Have to drive something right?

P.S. I would buy Blazer before I would buy an Impala and I owned an Impala

So far the Impala is crushing the Blazer in sales! I joke I joke of course the Blazer will eventually sell more.

But so far this year Accord is up almost 5%. Corolla is up 1%. Civic down 5% Malibu is flat. Fine Camry is down 10%. Discontinued lines like Cruze down a lot. But we may be seeing the bottom on sedan/hatch sales, which are not tiny. Camry sold around 82K, even with decline from 91K. Malibu flat at 34K. Etc.

I still think the sedans are down but not out. These swoopy roof lines and the doors that go with them have played a part in their down turn because all the aging boomers don't like squatting and crouching to get in. That is hard on the back and other joints.

give us a proper "formal roof" sedan with a good trunk opening and NOT so LOW to the ground

This is a part of a multi-step process where passenger utility will be maximized, propulsion will be standardized, and vehicles will be made for a shareable economy. Right now, cars are going away and CUV's/SUV's are taking over share. Next step is to price them out of the market as a second car. Instead of multi-car garages, your local Chevy dealership will be part of a Chevy franchise of people movers.

While we don't have those giant boat cars the trend for sedans over the past 30 years has been larger not smaller, every sedan name plate that was around 30 years ago today is much larger then it use to be. I will use the Honda Accord as an example of this...

    first gen

    175 inches long
    64 inches wide
    54 inches high

    second gen

    174 inches long
    65 inches wide
    54 inches high

    third gen

    179.7 inches long
    67.4 inches wide
    53.4 inches high

    fourth gen

    185.2 inches long
    67.1 inches wide
    52.8 inches high

    fifth gen

    188.4 inches long
    70.1 inches wide
    55.3 inches high

make it faster here is the 10th gen Accord

    192.2 inches long
    73.3 inches wide
    57.1 inches high

This is something that has happened pretty much for every sedan, they have all grown in size so you can't say that people are moving into SUVs and CUVs because sedans are getting smaller. Maybe you are just getting larger (I mean this in no offense).

Im 6 ft 2 209 lbs . Might have put on 10 lbs over the years. I drove older Impala's Olds Regency 98's Buick LeSabre's and Park Ave's etc... So let me get this straight. You telling me in general sedans got bigger? I might have been 190 - 200lbs when I drove those.

I actually find myself longing for a sexy sedan or coupe now that I'm in an XT5. Yes it's real convenient but...

I think in a few years when the kid costs go down a little I will buy something lower to the ground as a second vehicle - probably a Camaro if they still make them.
