Back in August, we exclusively reported the upcoming mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette Z06 would feature a twin-turbo flat-plane-crank dual-overhead-cam V-8 based on the C8.R race car's engine. Now, we can report from an even higher-placed source that the range-topping C8 Corvette ZR1 will add a performance hybrid system to boost it to 900 hp.

Our source wouldn't elaborate on the engineering details, so we're still unclear whether street cars will share the C8.R's 5.5-liter displacement, which is unusually large for a flat-plane engine and would likely vibrate too much for customers' liking. Past rumors have suggested displacement ranging from 4.2 liters to 5.5 liters.

Naturally, electric motors, a battery pack, inverters, and wiring will add substantial weight to the car, which is why it all needs to add enough power to balance things out. The big question is where Chevrolet will place the battery, which it will want to mount as low as possible to keep a low center of gravity. Other mid-engine hybrids mount it in the firewall between the engine and the seats. It's also possible it could be mounted in the bottom of the frunk or trunk, depending on how large it is. We expect it will be fairly small as it just needs to hold enough juice to boost the engine under hard acceleration

Impressive. An 800 HP AWD ZR1 was pretty much a given. A 900HP Hybrid? Sweet.

AWD? So electric at front wheels? No drive shaft from rear?

People are speaking of ZR1, could you imagine how quick a grand sport will be. I mean a C7 grand sport makes really quick work of supercars on tracks..

    I'll be the guy, again.

Stop taking a purely numbers-focused approach to engineering and engineer with a headline and wow-factor in mind. 900, great. 1001, even better.

I’d be more excited to see the Z06 return to its roots. Light weight, N/A and track focused. The Z06 should be the GT3RS competitor.

I'll believe it when I see it....there was the LTK 777hp Camaro rumor in 2015 the 5.5L vette rumor going 13 years strong thatll never die so forgive me if I'm skeptical of the AWD TT v8 hybrid rumor after they sorta just came out saying that hybrids arent a focus.

Apparently a second hybrid Vette is in dvelopment with around 600hp. So it appears GM has abandoned hybrids...except Vette. Perhaps some sort of expensive hybrid options for Escalade too?

I'll be curious to see how much of a weight penalty the hybrid components add.

Thisll probably be the first 4,000lb Corvette. Personally, I'd rather something along the lines of the Huracan Performante, NA and as light as possible.

    Edit: yeah, what bhobbs said
