Rumor - Chevy Camaro SS to Get More Power

"According to ***********, the Camaro SS is set to receive a power bump. Their sources are indicating that more power will be coming to both the LS3 and L99 Camaro SS.

The power bump is said to be a reaction by GM to the new Mustang 5.0’s quicker quarter mile time. No exact power increase numbers were quoted or provided, but the increase in power would begin with the 2012 Camaros.

This would make the second major change coming to the 2012 Camaros, in addition to the expected revamped and improved interior.

Sounds good. I would not expect anything major from the interior refresh. Too little times has passed to expect a major revamp. I hope I'm wrong, but I'd bet we'll get a new steering wheel and that's about it.

I find it sad that some people wish for GM to fail and can't comprehend any good news. A plausible explanation for this kind of behavior is that you have a miserable life so you wish the same to others. Cory Pham, Autoblog Poster

GM must return its divisions to being interdependent entities within the corporation. Decentralize and free the different divisions talents to foster brand differentiation and customer loyalty.

I just hope that they don't decrease the fuel economy so much. People are just as concerned with MPG's as HP's and ft/ibs.

    But, good news nonetheless.

Any body want to take a guess how much extra hp and tq?

Is this the new 5.5 liter motor or is it a boost to existing powerplants?

I believe direct injection boosts hp 5 to 8% usually...

Can we see 426hp move to 444hp and the 400 hp motor move to 420hp?

Good to see the general move forward in the battleground with ford..

Steering wheel is about the only thing untouched. Whats wrong with it anyway?

    Agreed.

If they can bump up the power without lowering the mileage, then do it. Otherwise, I'd wait until the Camaro moved to a lighter platform.

One little thing GM could do is dump the L99 and use the LS3 for both manual and automatic equipped cars.

Good question. I enjoy it, too, as does our full-time 'Maro driver.

Intrigued to see what really does happen with the interior...

Get some forged wheels on it for better times! Freaking stock wheels are over 120lbs IIRC.

Still, lots to be had with a better tune and intake. That could easily give them 20HP.

I like the Camaro steering wheel, its different from the square steering wheel design (like what was in the G8) that GM uses on almost all of their new vehicles. They can update the rest of the interior though, too much hard, cheap feeling and looking plastic. They can also dump that shiny plastic, body-colored bit that is on the door panels and dash, every time I get into a Camaro, I can't stand it. In all honesty though, overall the interior is fine, and I doubt they will change much of anything.

Re: Rumor - Chevy Camaro SS to Get More Power

I don't see them adding DI to the 2012 Camaro but I can see them adding VVT to the LS3 engine in the manual transmission and a slight retune for the L99 car.

Maybe some Gen V tech will make it into the engine (I am thinking concentric camshaft VVT). Cam phasing VVT can add 10-12% more horsepower when the intake and exhaust are linked and even more when they are seperated.
