Mustang Vs. Camaro: Former GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz Picks A Clear Winner

    Road & Track magazine
    August, 2017; Page 108

Bob Lutz, now 85 and only semi-retired, is an auto industry legend. He's one of a still-too-rare species of Detroit executive known as a “car guy,” an enthusiast who puts the product first and then figures out how “the bean counters” can afford to build it. He has held top spots at BMW, Ford, Chrysler and General Motors.

The minute I saw the new Mustang and the new Camaro, I knew Ford had won this round.

The Mustang is a design masterpiece; sleek, semi-European, yet still a Mustang. Independent rear suspension or not, it is a winner.

The Camaro, an even better car, sinks into quasi-irrelevance. You can't tell it from the previous one. "The same as before, only smaller" has never been a winning formula in a fashion-conscious segment.

The current Camaro, although fabulous, missed the mark.

Before I ordered a new vehicle last November, I test drove the Chevy SS and a V6 Camaro, both equipped with a manual transmission. Both were great vehicles and I had a hard time selecting between the SS and my current car.

I don't understand what the GM engineers were thinking when designing the Camaro interior. While it has four seats, good luck transporting four people and an absolute minimum amount of luggage. Not that the car I selected shines in that category either!

This topic has been beaten to death.

I get what he is saying and I agree that the public is agreeing with their wallet and buying the Mustang. However, I think the current gen looks a lot better than the last gen. Best analogy I can think of is the girl with a pretty face but was 30 lbs overweight, then she went to the gym, dropped the weight and now looks like a model. To me, it's not that the current gen Camaro looks bad, it's that the new Mustang looks better. I wonder what the sales would be like for the Camaro if the Mustang was just another rehash of the same, "generic Mustang" styling it has had for 15 years.

I am certain GM has learned a lesson from the current gen's sales vs. the Mustang. On a positive note GM now has the spectacular, world beating chassis that they just need to put a pretty (prettier) face on for the next gen. I am certain the new design chief has his minions working on it, I can't remember his name.

The day (Month? Year?) belongs to Tesla and Job One of the new Model 3, (which as most of us know is being made in a former Camaro production plant).

Nice to have something else to talk about...

The last time saw the sales figures for these two cars, both were down. It was just that Camaro numbers had dropped more than Mustang numbers.

Like I've said before, had Bob Lutz been around, we would have gotten all the mechanical goodness of the current Camaro but wrapped in design masterpiece sheetmetal.

    Carry on.....

Maybe I am just a GM guy, but new Mustang looks okay, but its looks fat to me (same thing they complained about Gen 5 Camaro), I prefer the Camaro, hands down. I guess I am the only one.

The problem is that Camaro girl already got a reputation for being a bit of a bitch to live and not a very pretty person on the inside. Everyone knew she was really fast and fun to hang out with.

So yeah, she lost 30 lbs. is bit hotter, faster and maybe more fun but didn't really fix herself inside or change her reputation....

Or maybe Bob Lutz is completely right. Could certainly be that.

I think the current gen Camaro looks awesome too! Though for the first time in my life I think the Mustang looks good too.

Agreed 100%, the 05-09 Mustangs looked much better than the current version.

Also, when a girl loses 30 pounds, she needs to get new clothes.

While Lutz might be right, he really wasnt that noted as a car designer either. I mean, he is the guy that put ole' Ed Welburn as chief designer.

I love both cars from certain angles. I love the rear 3/4 shot of a Mustang. Yet, from straight back it looks extremely wide and awkward. The front view of a GT350 has to be the best front bumper in the last 5 years.

The Camaro looks great from the front 1/4 shot. It's side profile is very awkward as well thanks to the belt line.
