The Last D/H Impala Is On The Line; The End Is Near

    Detroit Free Press
    February 21, 2020

The very last Chevrolet Impala makes its way down the D/H production line on Tuesday, February 18, 2020. It is expected to roll off the line on February 28, 2020 ending ICE production at the plant. (Photo: Eric Seals, Detroit Free Press)

On Thursday, the body shell for the last Chevrolet Impala inched through the assembly line toward final production. As it did, several employees gathered around the car, snapping pictures as workers added the hood and it moved closer toward the annals of history.

The car is expected to roll off the line by Feb. 28. GM will then shut down the conveyor belt and sliding skillet and the manufacturing of internal combustion engines at Detroit-Hamtramck will be over.

Will the current generation be missed? I certainly doubt it. Who among us has not owned, or had a family member own, a Chevrolet Impala? It has served us well. Interesting that the current generation also has one of the highest test ratings ever from Consumer Reports.

Looking forward to Job One in 18 months or so, as General Motors contemplates nothing less than the absolute reinvention of the automobile as we now know it.

Re: The Last D/H Impala Is On The Line; The End Is Near

If GM had built cars with the engineering and quality level of the Impala back in the 1990s, they'd still control the car market. Heck, Oldsmobile might still be in business.

I was very impressed the with rental Impala I had back in October. I drove 1500 miles in a week. It's just a great highway cruiser with tons of room. When I would tell people how impressed I was with it, they'd ask derisively, "Yeah, but would you buy it?" And in silver, it was a pretty boring looking car. My answer was no. But if I had no other car options and it was an Impala vs. all these CUVs on the road, yeah I probably would buy it over 90% of them. Sure as hell would take it over a CRV, RAV4, or Equinox.

In the past, I've had a 5th gen Camaro, a CTS sedan and coupe, two 3rd gen Firebird Formulas, a convertible 4th gen Trans Am, a Reatta, a couple of Monte Carlos, an Avenger coupe, a couple of Cavalier hatchbacks, a Saturn SC1, and a Cherokee.

I've owned two Impalas in my life.. unless U count my old '73 Caprice Classic Convertible when I was in my 20s. I still have my '66 SS.. but I definitely loved my '14 LTZ. She was a phenomenal vehicle.. with styling that was second to none in its class and right up their with any luxury car U could think of. The interior was actually above class in terms of fit and finish and tech for the time.. and was always a conversation filled with compliments. Reliability wise.. in the entire time I had her I had one problem in those almost 7 years and over 170K.. I replaced wheel bearing assembly at 60K after hearing a "whirring noise." Friends I had who bought the Impala never complained out it.. so maybe it was a first year issue. When I sold her.. she still ran smooth and looked marrrrvelous (channeling Billy Crystal on SNL)

Huge believer that the Impala and SS should have been combined on Omega.. giving triple sales to the platform. I would have put it out with a 2.0LT, 3.6L, and a 6.2L and S/C 6.2L. Obviously less tech and luxury than the CT6

I wanted to buy this generation Impala (or its Buick brother), but, the price in the end was higher than the Tahoe I purchased (after all incentives were baked in).

No doubt that GM was creating its own story to kill off the ICE car by removing any incentive to buy it...

Both Impala and LaCrosse, in my view, were the best built (daily driver based) FWD cars built by GM or any other brand out there. Too bad their long term strategy went against the success of these vehicles.

With respect.. I guarantee that even with the incentives.. from a business point of view.. GM preferred U buy the K2xx Tahoe over any other vehicle in its line-up sides the Escalade.. which has a higher profit margin

I remember seeing the Impala when it first came out. Navy blue and those 20' wheels, It looked fantastic in LTZ form.

I thought the same. It was a beautiful design but I did dislike that unique steering wheel.

Consumer Reports has always given GM low ratings. They are full of BS. I've owned GM cars for many many years and I've found them better than some of the foreign cars that I've owned prior to GM's.

They were founded by committed anti American socialists from the 60s. They went on to rob the united states of its toaster industry and have tried hard to demean any American products over the years, shooting their union colleagues in the foot.

I think that was designed to mimic the S Class.

You got the interior I prefer. That said, the 20's were better in my opinion.

I was in Hawaii last week and I saw so many Impala rentals on the road (several LTZs). Never seen so many Impalas.

They just look so good on the road, beautiful cars. I was suppose to get one but I ended up getting a Jeep instead. Better off road yes but I would have preferred the Impala!

What a shame they are going away.

Same - GM makes very reliable cars and they are cheaper to fix when they do need repairs also.
