Pinky Randall, a 93-year-old Michigan man who bought the final Impala SS in 1996, now owns the last Impala GM plans to make ever.

A Michigan man known as "Mr. Chevy" bought the final Chevrolet Impala. And it's not the first time he's done so.

Pinky Randall, whose enthusiasm for the brand has been documented over the decades in Automotive News and elsewhere, took delivery this month of the final Impala built before General Motors shut down the plant to retool for electric vehicles. The Cajun Red Impala Premier came with a letter from Chevy Vice President Steve Majoros certifying it as the last of 18,368 Impalas produced for the final model year.

Randall, a 93-year-old retired grocery store owner from Houghton Lake, Mich., who collects pretty much anything bearing the Chevy bow tie, also bought the last Impala SS in 1996. He even visited General Motors' plant in Arlington, Texas, to drive it off the line. Randall later sold the car to GM's Heritage Center.

GM revived the Impala name after a three-year hiatus and built about 4 million more of them until Feb. 27, when Randall's latest acquisition marked the car's demise — this time, presumably, for good.

    What a great story!

Let's hope General Motors brings back the Impala one day, and should they once again discontinue the nameplate...let's hope Mr. Randall is still around to buy the last one and drive it off the line.

    Go Pinky!!

And the way GM is going, if there is another one, it very well could be electric by then.

Loyalty like that is hard to find in 2020. Good man.

With all the bleak news these days - I really miss reading stories like this.

How the mighty have fallen. It is refreshing to see that at least I was wrong about the last impala being a silver LT destined for a rental stand...It went out with a subtle pop...a Crimson red tintcoat Premier.

Of course. They went from a fun RWD V8 to a boring FWD V6 so the next step would be a lifeless electric.

The 1996 one was much cooler!

If Blazer can appear on a Crossover, Trailblazer on a cute-ute, Impala can certainly find a home again. Personally I'm hoping for a line of electric cargo vans. 😂

Nice guy, good for him. At least he got red and not another boring soulless silver vehicle to roam the streets. But yikes, this is like exactly the reason that I left my fierce loyalty to one manufacturer and have also been losing enthusiasm about the industry in general. The Impala was a good looking (with horrible steering wheel) vehicle that was also incredibly boring. But even that was killed to make more room for vehicles that somehow are even more boring. This guy has seen enormous change in the industry over his lifetime and I shudder to imagine what is out there when I'm his age. Probably some blobby autonomous pod with 500 microphones and cameras inside looking for reasons to ding your social credit score while also playing "woke" propaganda over the radio.

They need to wait until this poor guy goes to meet the maker before they bring out an Impala SUV

Did this man by any chance happen to buy the FIRST Chevrolet Impala ? He would have been 30 years old in 1958.

I'd agree that I have stopped following the car industry as keenly as I once did because of what has happened to it. I'm tired of the number of SUVs, crossovers and pickup trucks that populate our roads. I despise dealing with them on the road because the drivers can't take a corner to save their lives, and they sit on the fast lane like it is their birthright. More over, driving these trucks is more for looks (you'd think they'd choose something with actual looks) than utility. The small beds of most trucks these days can't be particularly useful. If it's any consolation, even as some of the electric brands promote autonomy, Teslas are generally great cars to drive, and the Lucid Air, with the same engineer working from a clean slate, promises to be even better. It will be nice to have something take the suck out of tunnel traffic. The trouble is that even that doesn't mean that anyone is building a car for me anymore, either, really. The first clue I'd offer is my avatar. It is shrunk from an ad for a car from an estate sale years ago, and the license plate has the slogan "Best of all, it's a Cadillac" on it. The car was a Coupe de Ville from about 1981. My current object of lust is the last generation of Buick Riviera. When that's what you really want, you're looking in the past, as nothing in the present will suffice.

That would have been cool to have it happen that way. An equally interesting question would be where that first Impala is...
