IL - 2010 Chevrolet Equinox LT2 Full Test and Video

    The Things That Buyers Want

    What Works:
Feels more substantial than competitors; interior design leads the segment; optional features of more premium crossovers

    What Needs Work:
Falls short of observed fuel economy expectations; transmission is reluctant to downshift; steering lacks information

    Bottom Line:
Chevrolet (finally) shows what it can do.

To my knowledge this is the first review that reports fuel economy to be below that of the EPA estimate.

I bet I could get at least 32. We have no trouble getting 33 with our 30 rated Malibu.

regardless of what the rated fuel economy numbers are, what you get is determined by how you drive.

You can buy a Honda Civic and get 10MPG out of it and you can buy a Z06 Corvette and get 30MPG out of it.

These Car magazine need to get over themselves when it come to 4 cylinder engines. there is only so much power that you are ever going to get out of them but they are being used to increase fuel efficiency. So they need to stop being so critical of 4 bangers and instead celebrate them for getting great mileage. Other than that it was a great review.

its funny, they take it to the drag strip, the race track, salom and then say, gee, we are not getting the advertised mileage.

Its funny how when ur given a free car u decide to see how fast it can go instead of how it drives normally.

Its about time they looked at what each car is on its merits, the 4 cylinder model is all about fuel economy so why worry about 1/4 mile times, they need to also show that with some sensible driving what kind of mileage this car can really get, but then that might make GM look good, cant have that

I bought a new 2008 Impala LTZ with the active fuel managment feature. The car was rated at 18 mpg city and 28 mpg highway (regular unleaded fuel - not with E85 ethanol). The rating was the "new" revised / lowered rating put in place for the 2008 model year.

Despite my best efforts, I have never achieved the mpg ratings - the car now has 15,800 miles on it. I use an AC Delco filter and full synthetic oil.

On a long, expressway drive with two passengers, no luggage, windows up and no air conditioning (cool weather), the best I could do using cruise control at 73 mpg was 25.9 mpg. In a mix of suburban and expressway driving, the best the car does is 16.3 mpg.

I really like the new Equinox. But - I am very, very doubtful of its mpg ratings.

That's true, the one thing that boggles my mind how Consumer Reports managed to get 18 mpg combined with 3.8L pushrod on late model LaCrosse. Even if I wanted I could not make that in pure city driving in Toronto metro area. I guess if they really needed to bash GM vehicle they can skew the test to make "needs improvement" or "lows" category.

Impressive as it is it still need to meet all of the advitised goals without difficulty. Remember we / GM are fighting to regain not just to maintain. The more areas you can best your compertition the better chance you have of doing that. GM has a reputation for over promising and under delivering. They can ill afford to go that route again.

I leased a 08 Impala w/ the same 3.9L for two years. At cruising speed of 60 the car EASILY did 30-33MPG. The fuel ratings are not based on a cruising speed of 73.
Look at GM's most recent products..there is definitely a future there...Hidden Content Hidden Content

Most of the time, we circumvent the default transmission programming by pressing a sport button. Only the Equinox doesn't have a sport button and instead has an "Eco" button, which engages even more extreme fuel-economy programming that is meant to improve fuel economy by 1 mpg, but also makes the transmission even more stubborn about responding to your demands.
There's the reason they got poor fuel economy.

You're not going to get great fuel economy in a vehicle that size if you do any spirited driving.
