GM & Isuzu To Discuss Joint Development Of New Pickup; GM Possible Isuzu Stake?

    Reuters News Service

    January 9, 2013

an 9 (Reuters) - General Motors Co and Isuzu Motors Ltd will discuss the possibility of jointly developing a next-generation pickup truck, GM said in a statement on Wednesday.

The two automakers signed a memorandum of understanding to start negotiations, but GM declined to outline the timing of the talks or any other aspect of the potential deal.

The Japanese newspaper Nikkei reported that the tie-up would be formalized late this month in a meeting in the United States between Isuzu President Susumu Hosoi and GM CEO Dan Akerson.

The companies have worked together on trucks in the past, which led to the development of the original Chevrolet Colorado mid-size pickup truck from GM. Isuzu sold it as the i-Series.

The two companies will also continue talks on the possibility of GM, the largest U.S. automaker, taking a stake in Isuzu, Nikkei reported. A GM spokesman declined to comment.

GM "finds a new road" by driving down one from its past.

Access to Isuzu diesels and technology would (once again), be a very good thing.

I am sure they have learned something. Nevertheless, how many new applications have you seen DMax go into?

Isuzu is much more focused on Diesels than GM. It would be a net positive.

Aren't GM and Isuzu still involved in the production of these things too?

Apparently not. The new GM diesel is in production limbo due to cost factors.

A modern diesel sourced from an Isuzu plant in Thailand for example, might be a great start to any proposed relationship or joint-venture.

Yes, and they are very good trucks. Like you, I want to see a return of the medium-duty Kodiac and TopKick.

Re: GM & Isuzu To Discuss Joint Development Of New Pickup; GM Possible Isuzu Stake?

I had read on this site that GM had bought out the remaining Isuzu stake in the Dmax a few years ago. The last LML design had 60% new parts that GM designed. An American truck with an Isuzu engine.......ugh. Hopefully, this so called joint pickup is for overseas.

The Kodiak was a true truck design through and through, albeit overpriced. From what others have posted here on this site, is that something may already be under wraps for a 4500/5500 series truck. GM has waited long enough to get back into the MD market. IMHO, GM can do this on their own.

** Update. this link debunks what I had read earlier: http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/n...1116_dmax.html

I don't think the LCOEs are still in production.

I wish the return of the Kodiac and TopKick as well.

For Isuzu diesels, will it include also diesels engines for cars as a plan B if GM sold its part of VM Motori to Fiat?

I wish Chevy would have used the Kodiak name for the Silverados & use the name all the way up to the 8500 series trucks. The same with Sierra instead of Topkick. Where did the name Topkick come from?

I agree. Why can't GM with all of it's American engineering might, design and build their own trucks and own engines? I may be wrong but does not Ford build their own diesels in house now? Why can't Chevrolet? Ford builds their own trucks, again, why can't Chevrolet? Let's hope this is indeed for overseas. Nothing against Isuzu but the so called S-10 replacement Colorado both current and upcoming do absolutely nothing for me. And I'd rather my Chevy or Ford truck be genuinely Chevy or Ford powered. If I wanted an Isuzu I'd buy an Isuzu.
