Sonic is a great car hampered by low gas prices and an overall decline in car sales.

If fuel prices spike again, they may need the Sonic, I hope they keep making it for the rest of the world so they can bring it back as needed. What about the Spark?

I really liked the impala. The first car I bought was a 2005 impala. Makes me sad to see it go. Maybe it'll comeback in a few years on VSS-R

That's the only class where the premium brands doesn't have a say in Europe, except for the retro Mini and Audi A1. And to keep it that way, the mainstream brands offer some nice cars. From slow to fast, hard plastic to soft touch, low tech to high tech, 3-door, 5-door, station wagon, convertible, diesel, gas, alternative fuel, electric, manual, auto, DSG. No need to make excuses like "If they offered this and that ...".

Was. It's old on top of being in a segment nobody seems to care about.

When it came out, it was definitely neato and a great product.

Re: GM to end production of Chevrolet Sonic, report says

Assuming this is true, sad day for me. I'll probably trade in my 2015 for a 2018 if that's the last year available, in manual-transmission form it's too fun to pass up. Or possibly one of the last Cruze manuals, assuming that manual tranny is going away as rumored.

Modest updates could have kept it relevant, a higher-power sport version to tackle the Fiesta ST and some sort of high-MPG version (hybrid/diesel/etc.). Sales spiked every time they offered significant discounts, meaning people would get one over a Fiesta or Versa or Fit if the price was right.

But my question is, what happens to the Orion factory? Do they transfer Encore/Trax production there from Korea? Some new EV maybe?
Current ride: 2015 Chevy Sonic 1.8L 5sp manual sedan
Previous ride: 1998 Subaru Legacy Wagon AWD 2.2L 5sp manual
Next ride, pre-pandemic: Maybe a 2021 2.0T CT4, weekend car, keep the Sonic as DD
Next ride, post-pandemic: Keep driving the Sonic!

Sonic. Too bad Chibby ads are so freakin lame. They could have cut a deal with Sonic and made some great ads. As long as Chibby had no input, that is.

I'll be really sad to see the Impala go in a few years. It's an excellent sedan.

GM should keep the Sonic and Cruze around, if there is an economic implosion, they will wish they had...

Sonic ads aren't THAT great, especially not great enough to mention at least twice.

    2018 Volt + 2018 Bolt EV

GM has stated that they are increasing Bolt EV production this summer. Presumably for the 2019 MY. So Orion might just build the Bolt EV. They might also expand markets for the Bolt EV as well. I know when we got on our dealer wait list in Aug 2017 we were number 12 on our Dealers wait list. GM has since increased Bolt EV production last fall and still when we took delivery of our Bolt EV at the beginning of March the dealer wait list now stood at 20 (and growing).

As for the Sonic. My wife had a 2013 Sonic that we owned for nearly 5 years. It was a fantastic car. Unfortunately with the heavy refresh of the Spark and low pricing on the Cruze and introduction of the Cruze hatch the Sonic has been squeezed. So I think the decision to end it's production makes sense.

As for the Impala. Yes the Impala sales are well down historically. However this car still outsells almost all of Cadillac's cars combined and still sells in decent volume. With others pulling out of the full size sedan market I think it would be a mistake for GM to leave the segment. I think they should continue to offer the Impala but plan for it to continue to be a smaller segment.

GM also stated that they will be launching two more electric vehicles in the next 18 months (This was said 6 months ago). And they apparently will be using the Bolt EV platform. So any extra capacity at Orion might be used here as well.

Man, it's sad to see this happen. The Sonic sold the best, and was the only car in this class made in the US. I guess EVs will have to take up the torch if/when FE cars become favorable.

I think by the time that happens, they almost definitely will.

Sadly there has been a shift away from cars and a spike in gas seems unlikely for the foreseeable future. U.S. production makes up a much larger part of the energy picture than 10 years ago.

Cruze won't go anywhere. GM must have a small car offering.

Impala is my favorite sedan on the market but the writing has been on the wall for a long time. I almost bought a 1 year old Impala LTZ last summer when I was shopping.
