GM discontinues Chevrolet Sonic amid sales slump as the demise of small cars continue

The Chevrolet Sonic, once billed as an example of Detroit's ability to make small and youthful cars, is going away.

General Motors confirmed Tuesday that it is discontinuing the Chevy Sonic, a subcompact car, "due to declining demand."

I still say GM needs 1 good small car in it's lineup or it will lose more young drivers to Japanese and Korean brands.

...or not-so-young drivers like me! Agree they need to have one good small car in the lineup.
Current ride: 2015 Chevy Sonic 1.8L 5sp manual sedan
Previous ride: 1998 Subaru Legacy Wagon AWD 2.2L 5sp manual
Next ride, pre-pandemic: Maybe a 2021 2.0T CT4, weekend car, keep the Sonic as DD
Next ride, post-pandemic: Keep driving the Sonic!

Trax, Encore, Encore GX, and Trailblazer are GM's good small cars now.

Yes and no - consider a Sonic starts at $16,800 and a Trax starts at $21,300.

If you are on a budget - that is a huge $$ difference!

GM clearly doesn't see the value of a small car in the lineup and that could mean lost upgrade sales down the road.

    TrailBlazer starts at around $19k.

I think we'll end up seeing the Onix in the US eventually.

Shocker, there isn't any demand for a penalty box sized subcompact that returns midsize sedan fuel mileage....The Sonic is rated at 34MPGs highway, that's piss poor for a subcompact sedan:

Ah...I'm sorry it's a penalty box sized subcompact that gets worse fuel economy than a midsize sedan

and MOST of the Japanese brands offer products for LESS CASH and Nissan / Mitsubishi have gotten quite "friendly" to people with less than grade "A" finances

Mother is really making a huge mistake.
She also needs to pay Ohio back, and the Ausies for all the tax money she collected

TBH, your credit has to be pretty poor in order to not find financing nowadays...GM/Toyota/Honda/Hyundai do subprime as well, GM calls it "nonprime" to avoid the stigma w/ the term "subprime".

I honestly don't think people look at mileage numbers much anymore even on the low end of cars. You are right though - mileage is not great.

I think that's more out of desperation than a good business move, especially now that we are headed into something that will make 2008 look like nothing, Nissan/Mitsu will be the first to get hurt with subprime loans. And really bad for Mitsu because that is what destroyed them in our market 20 or so years ago - to much cash on the hood and subprime lending.

Even the best score in the JD Power IQS couldn't save it.

Chevrolet Sonic achieves the best score of any model: The Chevrolet Sonic, with just 103 PP100, has the best score of any model in this year’s study.

It's a pretty nice little car I must say. I rented one for 3 days and I had no complaints, zipped around Chicago just fine!

I thought that's all they cared about when buying that far downmarket...TBH when I bought that Versa a couple years ago all I cared about was mileage/price....$8k for a subcompact that got 40mpgs hwy paid for itself over spending damn near 500/mo in gas alone filling up my 16mpg Magnum that I used to use as a DD on a 40mi commute.
