GM insiders tell us a Corvette brand will eventually include a sedan and an SUV or crossover
    Autoweek

General Motors intends to leverage the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette for even greater profit than a midengine Stingray might generate on its own. The corporation is planning a new Corvette brand that will eventually include a sedan and an SUV or crossover, according to GM insiders. It will also create its second Corvette-based Cadillac sports car.

Executives at the C8 reveal in Tustin, California, including GM president Mark Reuss and Jim Campbell, vice-president of performance vehicles and motorsports, wouldn’t address either plan. But the executives did not explicitly deny them, either.

"I can't say anything one way or the other," said Campbell.

I have always opposed this and probably still do, but Chevrolet branding has been such a disaster since Lutz left, maybe it's time to break the branding logjam.

Though I'm excited for the performance vehicles, didn't FCA try this by having a brand where all the performance was housed under? I forget what they called it, but they quickly got rid of that. And if GM makes a "Corvette" brand, what does that mean for Chevy? Meaning if they do come out with a next gen Camaro (I think there will be an electric one) will that be under the Corvette brand? I think for GM to do this, there are a lot of items to think through. And will this be a stand alone product line or will it be a subset of Chevy, meaning still part of the Chevy showroom? To me it wouldn't make sense to have this Corvette brand coupled with Chevy, it should be paired up with Cadillac.

C8 is a game changer. Impressive.

    Now make an SUV Vette.

No but it is based off my actual Corvette. It was photoshopped by a former GMI member that was an auto designer. Sadly he passed away a few years back. I thought this chop would have made a sweet Impala SS at the time.

MonaroSS - I still hate that he's gone and I never met the guy. He had a way with design though... Would be very interesting to see what he would do to modify the current Camaro, or the coming CT5/CT4...

Spinning off Viper to SRT was a dumb half hearted move by FCA, If I remember correctly, the intention was to move other SRTs (300, JGC, Charger, Challenger, Cuda(?) ) over as well, but when it came to fruition it was just the viper and it was still sold within the same dealer network so the move was pretty much pointless. Spinning off Vette should only happen when a 2nd model is introduced, it may have been perfect to roll out the C8 concurrent w/ the C7 and start the Vette brand there, but...

MonaroSS is sorely missed on this site. I never met him either(he was an Aussie). He added a lot of astute insight and value to GMI for many years, including his personal chat sessions with Bob Lutz.

I just think it could be a "careful what you wish for" kind of thing. I myself don't get wrapped up into names, etc, but I know a lot of people do care. How would they feel if "Chevy" is no longer on a Camaro?

If Corvette becomes a stand alone brand I do t think you’ll see a lot of old Chevy model names go with it outside of those associated with Corvette historically. Not a lot of point in making a break from Chevy if you’re just building the same stuff without a Chevy badge on it.

Corvette Camaro? That name would never work. Corvette Chevelle too... not that GM would ever release another RWD mid/fullsized car... or any RWD car outside of Caddy.

I'd have preferred a Corvette brand with a front engined Vette, and a rear engined Vette, if we're going to talk hypothetical brands.
