Chevy Suburban Gets Hollywood Walk of Fame Star - (No Really)

    Detroit Free Press
    December 4, 2019

The famous Hollywood Walk of Fame has the names of musicians, actors, directors, producers, even fictional characters such as Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse on thousands of five-pointed stars embedded in the sidewalk.

Now it also has the name of a car: the Chevrolet Suburban SUV.

The Suburban is the first vehicle to get its own star, an award of excellence in film and television, on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It was presented Thursday by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and unveiled at a ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard.

“There’s really nothing else like the Chevrolet Suburban in this business, for two reasons,” said Dennis McCarthy, Hollywood picture car coordinator. “First, it’s one of the most versatile vehicles in the business, able to fit with any type of character."

The Suburban also gives a scene added importance, said McCarthy.

"When a convoy of black Suburbans appears on screen, you know that’s not the time to leave your seat to buy popcorn," said McCarthy.

It is generally regarded as the oldest continuously produced model name in the business. 84 years running (time out for WWII). Jeep gets a nod but there is some controversy about that because it is an entire "truck" line, not a specific model.

This to me reeks of desperation and terrible terrible marketing.

I think it's cool. It will be a big nothing-burger for most people but cool for a few.

I do like the look of the black Suburban's typically used in films for Secret Service, bad guys, etc. - it just has a cool, efficient presence about it.

Does seem odd to get a star, but whatever, it's cool - don't overthink it.

I've read that the Fiat 500 name came earlier, but it hasn't been in continuous production (meaning shut down more than just during WWII) so it's a toss-up as to who can claim the crown.

Considering how long the Chevy Suburban has been around I think it's kind of neat. Way to go Chevy and get some good advertising out of it maybe.

Suburban started production in 1934, Fiat 500 started production in 1936, but the 500 had numerous production gaps between generations.
