That thing where every road test - I mean EVERY one - ends up talking about events from 40 years ago. Nobody has to endure this. Not Mercedes, not Bugatti, not any other maker has its entire history given the "thoroughgoing critique" treatment. The worst one is Cadillac, but any GM can get the "Is this Buick going to be just like the '70 Riviera uncle Buck had." It's ridiculous beyond imagining, and nearly every magazine does it every time.

Sorry guys nut the entire discussion is weak..
Corvair was included in the news story that forms the basis of this discussion, along with Pontiac Fiero.

I don't think anyone is comparing C8 with Corvair, but Corvair was an historically significant automobile.. We were discussing it during the doldrum hours prior to the C8 unveiling.. It takes nothing away from C8 and didn't cost anything.

Some vehicles look just as bad IRL as they do in pics (It seems that for some price point acts as beer googles on this forum).

The Corvette looks great either way.

Corvair in many ways was the American Porsche 911, and the design influence was felt globally.
Actually the Falcon sold over 400k that same year.

The author of the hit piece failed to mention it was on a similar platform as the Tempest/F-85/Special and the Tempest used a modified Corvair transaxle. The Fiero used Chevette front suspension and the engine/transaxle was used in many other models. Half truths are pretty much the same as lies.

And like the Falcon, sales dies in the bum in the second half of the decade
as other vehicles began to take their place become more popular like
Mustang and Impala?....lots of changes happened in the 60s.

    On C8 Corvette,
I think the transition could have been managed better by forward building
more C7s and calling them Stingray Classic with 495 HP 6.2 in MT/AT.

That would have allowed GM to establish the new buyer group alongside
existing buyers who may or may not be buying their last Corvette...

General Motors has tried three times to sell cars with the engine behind the driver.

    All are viewed as failures.

Will the eighth-generation Chevrolet Corvette, scheduled to debut late Thursday in Tustin, Calif., break that streak?

It's a steep engineering challenge to place the engine in the rear of a vehicle. First, there are few off-the-shelf parts from other vehicles that can be repurposed. So the engineering bill is big.

GM's first production rear-engined car, the 1960-69 Chevrolet Corvair, had a flat-six air-cooled engine that shared no major parts with any other GM engine. The transmission was a two-speed automatic in a unique case. The manual transmission was also specifically made for the car. The suspension was also unique to the Corvair.

But, to be fair about it, you can not make it sound like GM didn't know how to engineer those cars. Politics played into the picture why it did not succeed. The Pontiac Fiero turned out to be a great car on it's last year of production, but GM quit making them. A stupid move. The Corvair was a fine care, but Nader hated GM so he wrote a book about how unsafe it was. Years later car experts said the car was just as safe as any other car.

Corvair front tires should be inflated to 15 PSI for proper handling characteristics

I am so glad I am not GM. Any future achievements would be immediately tainted by a mention of 3rd grade, and my detention worthy behavior.
I want a car so violent that the mere thought of full throttle would cause a heart attack. That actually going wide open throttle in would result in nothing less than instant death!
