2020 Chevy Malibu Hybrid Apparently Discontinued

Helping a co-worker look for a vehicle. She liked the Toyota Camry Hybrid, so I suggested she also take a look at the Malibu Hybrid.

A visit to Chevy.com and guess what - no hybrid is shown for the 2020 Malibu.

A search at the GM Order Guide site turns this up - apparently GM has discontinued the Malibu Hybrid. This makes perfect sense as many Malibu Hybrid components were shared with the (also discontinued) Chevrolet Volt.

Effective 8/12/2019, the following changes will be made to the Vehicle Order Guide:
    • Home Page-Removed "Hybrid (1ZE69)".
    • All sections-Removed Hybrid model 1ZE69 and (1HY) equipment group.

Ok, who will be the first to say "I didn't know the Malibu had a Hybrid model"?

That's correct Perian - GM confirmed on August 20 that Malibu Hybrid has been discontinued for MY 2020. From Green Fleet:

"We did discontinue the Malibu Hybrid for the 2020 model year due to low demand," said Kevin Kelly, a GM spokesperson.

Chevrolet has been offering the Malibu Hybrid since the 2016 model year, when it arrived as a new powertrain as part of the vehicle entering its ninth generation. It was a third powertrain to go with the 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines.
As I mentioned in another thread, this means that GM has officially ceased production of all Voltec powered vehicles globally. The glaring ineptitude of GM's executives and marketing dweebs in this context is quite sad, really. The hybrid was easily the best ninth generation Malibu variant. Its powertrain was nearly as good as those in the Camry Hybrid and Accord Hybrid. The 1.5T Malibu is weak and noisy; the 2.0T Malibu, while perkier, falls short of Honda's Accord 2.0T.

Best sedan I've ever owned. Quick, efficient, the Volt in a usable package. 44.9 combined mpg through 67K miles. Of course GM can't sell them as they don't make very many of them.

Be careful Perian - statements like this " This makes perfect sense as many Malibu Hybrid components were shared with the (also discontinued) Chevrolet Volt." get you in trouble with certain "experts" on here who say they have nothing in common (they do - only the bigger engine on Malibu and the missing PHEV part of Voltec from the Volt separate them).

GM should be selling an Equinox or Traverse with that hybrid powertrain right now. Stupid move to go all in on BEV when you have a world class hybrid electric system just sitting there.

    2016 Malibu Hybrid
    2013 Sonic LTZ HB
2003 Porsche Boxster S (sunny days and track events)
April 2008 to August 2017 - 2008 Colorado CrewCab Z71 RWD. 81K miles and 21.2 mpg with a great truck
May 2014 to June 2016 - Cruze Diesel - 36.8 mpg over 33K miles with best tank of 50.2 mpg
April 2012 to May 2014 - Chevy Volt - 3 tanks of gas in 12.2K miles.

So they are cancelling the Malibu Hybrid...again. They'll bring it back in a few years, then cancel it once again a few more years later.

I think we've seen this excuse many times before. GM made the demand for the car artificially low so they wouldn't have to sell to many of them.

Well said Bigbee60. Too bad Mark Reuss disagrees:

So how long before it's only; PURE EV or 6.2L V8 for GM's entire offering?

So GM already deep-sixed the Sonic, Cruze, Impala and appear to be moving away from the Malibu faster than Ford is from the Fusion?

ELR, Volt, Focus, C Max, Leaf, Prius, it's not the Vehicle that is Low Demand, it is the Hybrid drive system, and with the threats of no Tax Incentives (most of which went into the Manufacture's Pockets) Electrification is a Long, Long, way off. For Any Brand but "Tesla". Tesla is in Demand because it is "Tesla" an Electric Only "Tech Company".

A Volt to me is just a Cruze, with a 45% "Gratuity" attached and a Battery.

If people aren't buying them why would GM continue to make them? Seems to be a very low volume Malibu model.

    That was never advertised. EVER!

If you bake the best cookies ever thought of, but no one knows, and you don't tell them, do you blame the world for not showing up to buy them? Really? That's what this is.

Yes, it costs money to build them, but MARKET THEM, dammit! If people knew anything about this, sales would have been better.

Correct! With the hybrid versions of Fusion and Malibu, Ford and GM respectively are indeed doing what you noted. GM completely gave up on Malibu Hybrid; Ford by contrast is pushing to overtake Toyota in hybrid sales.

Fusion Hybrid is currently the best selling hybrid sedan in the U.S. market, outselling Camry Hybrid and Accord Hybrid YTD. The Fusion Energi is the third best selling PHEV after Prius Prime and Clarity PHEV.
