GMI Drives: 2016 Kia Optima GT Turbo

With Holden (and everyone else south of 50k) departing the large car segment, the new Commodore will be doing battle in a very congested segment in the market. We take the Kia Optima GT out for a spin to see what you get for SV6 money.

    On Target:
    Handsome Looks
    Solid handling
    Nice seats (red leather)
    Impressive rear seat leg room
    Swift performance
    Well equipped tech and safety
    7 Year Unlimited KM Warranty

    Off the Mark:

    FWD Dynamics still limits progress
6 month servicing intervals (though second is only $199)
Pricing puts it in a tough fight
Swift but not as playful as a V6

    INSTAGALLERY: #OPTIMABALAM

Thanks for the review, MakMik! They've detuned the 2.0t the last few years in the USA. In fact, the 1.6t 7 DCT motivates pretty swiftly in US tests. Is that caah available down Oz Way?

    A few requests/questions:
    1. The "music" that punctuates the voice...or punctures ear drums. Krikey! That is a pestilence, at least INHO. I had to turn the sound off. Which means I didn't get to listen to most of the exam.
    2. Why do all you test-guys always video yourselves? I want to see the gauges, I want to see the road. I want to see a smokin' burn-out. I want to see the tires smoking from a 70-0 brake test. I want a vid of the car smokin' around a couple of corners.

I know what you look like.

    3. Translating from L/100k to MPG would be useful for us damned Yanks.
    4. What does six month service intervals mean?

Otherwise, driveon. Keep an eye on your mailbox for your cheque.

I usually film myself because I don't have a camera crew. I'd like to get more exterior shots, but I can't afford the personnel nor the hardware. I only managed to do 1 with external shots but that was when I was unemployed so I had plenty of time.

    3. As long as every US review translates mpg to l/100km for us Actually no don't bother - we're smart enough to do it ourselves
    4. The recommended time between services is 6 months regardless of how many kms the car has travelled. Ie bring the car in twice a year for servicing.

It reminds me of what a 2011 Pontiac Grand Prix might have been.

It does have a Pontiac... vibe about it. Still, it looks pretty decent to my eyes.

I've often thought of Kia, especially the Optima, as the Pontiac of Hyundai as well. They are a nice sporty looking mid-sized sedan. I've never had the opportunity to drive one but I have driven the Hyundai Sonata a few times as a rental. One was a base model and one was more mid-level. I was not impressed with the handling of either of them. I'm guessing the Optima is better based on your review. Both of them had the 2.4L and I got about 39 mpg on the day trips I took that were mostly highway driving.

Agreed.Where the rear quarter and roof pillar join is the spot that gets me. Just funky looking.

Not sure what the rest of you are looking at but this looks FAR MORE expensive and better than the Malibu.

#SideNote To the reviewer Kia does have a RWD car. Is the K900 not for sale there?

Yep. No RWD for Kia yet. The only RWD we have from the Hyundai Kia Group is the Genesis. I expect them to join the market by end of 2017 (but that is a complete guess).

Also, I was going to ask what people think about this vs the Malibu. It's a much better polished vehicle than the old Malibu, even though I didn't mind the diesel. We don't have the new Malibu here so we can't compare.

I saw a black one merging onto Eastlink last night. This is an extremely smart looking car. I was coming up from behind to a 3/4 rear view and from a distance I was not sure what it was (and I can usually identify a car from its shape long before I see any detail). Initially I was thinking BMW had done a more handsome remodel on the X6/Grand Turismo, and was pleasantly surprised when I worked out what it was.
