UK Plug-In EV Car Market Share Increased To Record 4.4% In October

Thanks to unprecedented growth in demand for all-electric cars, the British plug-in car market recently reached its new all-time high market share of almost 4.4% (slightly above the previous record of 3.8% in August 2019).

In October, new passenger plug-in car registrations amounted to 6,281 (up 41.8% year-over-year), while overall market shrunk by 6.7%.

BEV sales are booming but PHEVs this time didn't make any positive contribution:

BEVs 3,162 (up 151.8% year-over-year) at market share of 2.2%
PHEVs: 3,119 (down 1.7% year-over-year) at market share of 2.2%
Total: 6,281 (up 41.8% year-over-year) at market share of almost 4.4%

It could be the beginning of a trend, we wouldn’t know for sure for a few more years.

The bigger problem is mining and recycling.

Otherwise EVs are a net positive since they don’t emit any emissions locally, they might if the power comes from fossil fuel, but it is still an improvement, and as more green energy come online emissions will be reduced.

Now they just have to get people to buy them. 50 units per month is nothing (random example: hyundai ioniq EV; 391 sold thru September0.

Well, at ~4%, EVs are well past the "innovators" stage and into the "early adopter" stage in the technology adoption cycle. So, while it's a small fraction, it could very well be the start of an accelerating trend as Self Reliance said above.

That said, I suspect this number is inflated by the start of Model 3 deliveries in the UK. So it may dip in the near future before rising in the longer term.

EV sales in UK, and rest of Europe, is totally constrained by supply so no dealer stocks, long lead times, just one demonstrator at each dealer and artificially high residual values of used EVs, even those with lease batteries.

The numbers are low at present but the rate is ramping up.

Over half of us in the UK want Brexit but the Remain politicians are fighting a concerted rearguard action and delaying at every stage.

Looks like legislating your way to artificial increased demand is slowly working?

Given Europe's high taxation on road fuel, the cost saving by switching to EV is high - since governments will need to replace the fuel taxation revenue flow at some point, that difference may not last for ever - but road-pricing, ie electronic tolls may be the future tax.

Cars should be taxed on mass and dimensions. It is the weight (mass x gravity) that does the most wear on roads, and the larger the car is the more of the road it uses.

This way EVs would be taxed the same as other cars, except you'd save on fossil fuel taxes.

Logical - but that's not going to happen now - to some extent it happened automatically from the high duty on fuel, bigger the vehicle the heavier the fuel consumption, but that can't be done with EVs as electricity is multi-purpose.
