    UK: 'lektrik Sales Plunge

'Grave concern' as sales of low emission cars fall
    8 hours ago

Sales of low emission cars in the UK have fallen for the first time in more than two years, the industry has said.

The decline comes as overall sales of new cars continued to fall, dropping 4.9% in June from the year before.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said the fall in alternatively fuelled cars, such as hybrid electric vehicles, was "a grave concern".

It said efforts to sell such cars were being undermined by confusing policies and "premature" removal of subsidies.

The SMMT said sales of plug-in hybrid cars in June had halved since the same month a year earlier, while hybrid electric vehicle sales were down 4.7%.

This meant that the alternatively fuelled car sector saw overall sales fall for the first time since April 2017.

In last year's Budget, subsidies for plug-in hybrids were scrapped, and reduced for battery electric vehicles.

"Another month of decline is worrying but the fact that sales of alternatively fuelled cars are going into reverse is a grave concern," said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive.

"Manufacturers have invested billions to bring these vehicles to market but their efforts are now being undermined by confusing policies and the premature removal of purchase incentives.

"If we are to see widespread uptake of these vehicles, which are an essential part of a smooth transition to zero emission transport, we need world-class, long-term incentives and substantial investment in infrastructure."

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: "The plug-in car grant has supported the purchase of 180,000 new cars with over £700m, including 100,000 plug-in hybrids, and the government is now focusing on the cleanest, zero emission models.

"That focus has paid off - with registrations of battery electric vehicles up over 60% this year compared to the same period in 2018."

When will the tipping-point for electric sales arrive in Britain?

Driving-up sales of fully electric vehicles is the top priority for the Department for Transport, hence its decision to scrap grants for hybrids last year which will have contributed to the decline of hybrid sales.

Privately officials admit that the charging infrastructure for electrics is not where it should be.

The government says it is working with local authorities across the UK to address that.

Charging points on streets with no off-street parking is a particular challenge.

Another reason given for why sales of all low emission cars has not yet sky-rocketed in Britain is the up-until-now relatively low number of models on the market.

That is set to change over the next year or so with plenty in the pipeline.

And manufacturers have another reason to act. They could face fines if their new cars aren't green enough once European Union regulations kick-in in 2021.

Much has been said of the government's target of no new diesels and petrols by 2040.

But a more interesting question is: when will the tipping-point for electric sales arrive in Britain?

Experts inside and outside of government talk about 2025.

Norway has already reached its electric tipping point. High taxes for polluting vehicles and financial incentives for electrics mean for many there it's cheaper to buy and run an electric car.

Getting, at least close, to price parity in Britain will also be key.

    'Continuing confusion'
Karen Johnson from Barclays Corporate Banking said that while the dip in overall car sales was "no surprise", the fall in alternatively fuelled vehicles "will be more of a shock, and should make policymakers sit up and take note".

"There are two main factors hitting new car sales. One is the broader economic environment that is affecting consumer and business confidence across the retail sector, with big-ticket items particularly affected. The other is the continuing confusion around fuel types and the impact of new regulation on the future value of vehicles," she said.

"People are having to guess what the next policy move will be and this is affecting the used car market, with some book values down in part due to fears about future prices if further regulatory changes are introduced. This has a knock-on effect on appetite for new vehicles."

Plug-in car sales in the UK were down in May too. That said, plug-ins have been trending up over time, although not without some big fluctuations. One potential big disruption for the past few months could be people holding off for Model 3 availability. Apparently, the RHD Model 3s finally started being delivered in the latter part of June. Will be interesting to see what happens over the next few months.

Norway selling billions of barrels of oil on the world market gives it zero credibility. A country of hypocrites.

Any plunge in EV sales is just part of the ebb and flow of a bigger direction or trend. We're going electric ... eventually.

At 2% I'd say so. And getting all huffy about a minor bump, self-induced by government suits with calculators but no insight into human behavior, won't help things out.

Is that called an added value tax?

Only for Aussies wanting US models - not for Brits as most non-US car makers take LHD/RHD into account at the CAD stage.

Are they telling the whole story? All Euro car sales are down, so I'd expect EV sales to drop also. The Brits will just blame it on BREXIT.

Also Norway gets over 90% of its electricity from hydro. Sweden is over 60. My family members in Sweden heat their homes with electricity because it is so cheap. The same is true for Norway . Those countries are unique outliers, so their adoption of EVs is hardly relevant for other countries.

I'm guessing your family members in Sweden heat their houses with electricity because natural gas is expensive there, not because electricity is cheap in an absolute sense. Electricity in Sweden is about 19 Euro cents per kWh. That's about 60% more expensive than the US average.

I listen to a lot of UK Radio to keep up with Brrexit politics, and I am amazed at how super sold the British are on Global warming. There is bull like, research shows no matter how many trees we plant we can no longer reverse carbon dioxide' Do your part..

Its so sad, the Europeans are so Gullible..

But then there is no alternative media over there.

So its a wonder they are not doing their part in reducing our death before 2030

    Re: UK: 'lektrik Sales Plunge

All UK Nuclear Power are about to be commissioned soon.

    What no Electric Power?

Not a new power station planned in sight thats coming, that take 10 years to build from conception to delivering the first bit of electric power. They did have one planned but Hitachi pulled out of the contract with nobody left in place to build it.

British Government has been ducking in it's responsibilities not being honest where future electrical power will be coming from once the UK nuclear power stations are all decommissioned they have hiding the truth that it won't be able to deliver its electrical needs with renewables or will they meet thier targets of being carbon neutral by 2050 the only way they will achieve that in things like aviation would be to close every airport in the UK make sure no Airbus or Boeing ever flies into the UK ever again.

Nearly all of the UK's 13 Nuclear Power stations are coming up for decommissioning or been have already closed that are shown this old 2012 map, nothing new so far has been put in place replace them. Link to site decommissioning details LINK

UK will struggle to meet keep up with current household electrical power will probably have to tap into the French electric power grid, thats before the EV starts to take off EV's will need to be taxed off the roads in the future just like diesels & gasoline cars will soon because household demand will take priority over automotive demand. Hydrogen infrastructure and hydrogen cars seem like the only long term viable option.

Of course UK car sales are going to plummet in the future when thier environmental legislation kicks in, car factories will get closed down due to the mismatch in what the British Government environmental legislators want, the sales of expensive electrical cars that nobody can afford, and the total lack of profitability on electric cars for the carmakers.

I think that most British people have wised up to the British Government who told them to buy diesels because they are low CO2 help prevent global warming, now they are getting burned in the wallet if they buy them so they have no interest in the lies thier government tell them anymore, thier would be a massive drop off in British government revenue if everybody moved into an electric car so the Government would then have to find a new way of demonising electric cars to get the massive taxes they would lose if 70% diesel/gasoline fuel tax on every fill-up they collect at the petrol stations at the moment and huge taxes they have put on new diesel now and gasoline cars in the future when you buy them.

Just one nuclear power station left to power UK homes and whole new fleet of electric cars after 2025, it will all end in tears

    What no Nuclear Power?
