Uaw, gm open 2019 contract talks

Tuesday at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center on a new national agreement to replace the current four-year agreement that expires at midnight Sept. 14.

Contract talks will be held at GM’s world headquarters at the Renaissance Center in Detroit.

“We look forward to having productive discussions about building a stronger future for our employees and our business,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. “Our employees play a critical role in our success, and I am very excited about the opportunities in front of us that will enable GM and the UAW to lead in the transformation of the auto industry.”

GM has invested $23 billion in its American manufacturing operations over the last ten years and has accounted for 26% of all U.S. manufacturing investment since 2010. The company has announced additional commitments this year at plants in Ohio, Michigan, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana and Texas.

“The care, commitment and pride that GM employees put into each product makes us stronger,” said Scott Sandefur, who will serve as GM’s chief negotiator. “We look forward to working together with the UAW to reach a competitive agreement – one that allows our company, our employees and the communities where we do business to continue to share in the success of our efforts.”

Nothing the UAW can do to offset GM designing vehicles people don't want.

Tell that to the Folks in Lordstown. Tell GM to get out of South Korea and build the new Encore and Trailblazer in Ohio.

The big wigs at GM could do a lot to help improve their image and bolster our economy by building more things here, but at the same time the UAW can't be acting like they're holier than Thou like they do at times and creating more problems.

If they can't do that, UAW loses its only reasons for existing.

You could say that same quote to open factories in the US that would be more suited to build vehicles like that. A company can't keep factories open just to keep people employed. People have to remember that a job's function is to fulfill a need for a business, not employ a person. That's a harsh but true reality.
Wherever politics tries to be redemptive, it is promising too much. Where it wishes to do the work of God, it becomes not divine, but demonic.

GM is employing unionized South Koreans. Does that make it any different? Why build there if they don't buy there. I get their stupid thinking that China means millions of sales (Until China tosses them out.) GM pulled out of Australia, India, Russia and the EU. Pull out of South Korea. They probably won't because they're in bed with LG, since GM doesn't know how to build a battery or electric motors for EV's.

    What will this accomplish?

Since the bankruptcy the unions ranks have drastically dropped, increased the number of lower tiered workers, 3rd party workers, outsourced work etc. The company has been making record profits in the north America and with that money the company buys back some $20 odd Billion in stock, fires thousands of engineers including powertrain engineers and still downsizing manufacturing operations.

Root cause is still products that are not selling at anticipated volumes due to company not knowing what it's consumer base really wants.

You fail to see the point. The union among all the other flak going on IS STILL A THORN IN THE SIDE to GM and would be ONE LESS headache for them .

Re: Uaw, gm open 2019 contract talks

I'm a little ignorant on Unions/Labor, but how does this work w/ the Foreign Southern plants...do Hyundai/Kia/MB/Toyota/etc all operate their plants down south w/ labor that are actual company employees? or do they fall under a union just not the UAW. If these are all non-unionized plants, would it be cheaper for GM to just cut their losses and move down south away from union controlled plants?

Or....what is preventing GM from not negotiating w/ the UAW and just hiring on payroll employees to operate the in-place factories when the Union agreements expire?

Unless it is a position of high authority in union within the plants, all workers at GM plants are GM employees. The main difference for employees is that there is a formal grievance procedure with union representation, not simply at "at-will" scenario.

Regarding costs, the differential between what GM employees make and nonunion plants in the south make is relatively small especially when you consider the cost of living.

It would cost GM billions to "cut and run" from the north to the south, and if they were to do that, GM would probably just send the work to Mexico and China.
