Strong Rumor: Electric Hummer Pickup Coming In 2021

    The Detroit News
    November 15, 2019

General Motors Co. plans to build the electric versions of the Hummer, GMC Sierra and Cadillac Escalade at its Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant, according to LMC Automotive, an auto industry forecast company.

As a forecast company, LMC gathers intel from sources in the industry. From that, it has confirmed that GM will build a Hummer pickup truck and SUV in late 2021, Jeff Schuster, industry analyst with LMC Automotive told The Detroit News. A still-unknown van model is also expected to be built at the plant starting in 2021.

Reuters reported on Oct. 18 that the plant would revive the Hummer, which was discontinued in 2010 following the 2009 bankruptcy and a failed sale of the brand.

Re: Strong Rumor: Electric Hummer Pickup Coming In 2021

The strong rumor information above seems to indicate that the proposed electric Hummer pickup will be a full size unit to correspond to a production line fit with the also rumored electric Escalade and Sierra models to possibly be built at DHA.

How is that for a statement that has no basis in actual facts?

The Hummer is a lock, not just a rumor.

Of all the brands you could choose to revive, Hummer is the worst possible choice. When they launched it, I thought it was some sort of joke. Who would name a whole car company after a euphemism for a certain sex act? (Or course, i guess they already did that with Lacrosse, in French anyway.) Beyond that, it's just a stupid name. The products weren't very good. Slow, unwieldy behemoths that could barely wallow out of their own way. And they were reviled for their image and inefficiency. Yeah, bring that back.

Something I wonder every time I read it: how do you pronounce "Hamtramck?"

Agree...of all of the brand related changes they can make, they make quite possibly the dumbest one imaginable. You want to revive something, bring back the Firebird as an Alpha counterpart to the Camaro to sell at BGMC dealerships...but an Electric "Hummer", Jeez, the sexual jokes would literally write themselves.

While having a past image of excess, being electric will pretty much shut down all of the negativity. Hummer was also instantly recognizable, unique and upscale, I think it is a great idea to bring it back as an electric.

Yes, the name might give a few comedians something to laugh about, otherwise not a big deal to me.

I would think GM would get sued by the ex Hummer dealers that built bespoke Hummer dealerships right before it was shut down!

Well, Hummer was named after HMMWV for High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle. Quickly earned the nickname Hummer and that's where it came from.

I know the origin of the name. It's just a terrible name.

Recognizable sure, for no good reasons. Upscale only in price, not quality.

    Just stick with GMC.

If you revive an old name, which I don't think is necessary, do it with a high-performance electric and call it a Pontiac.

That would require GM to work to get a new model in GMC. Hummer is there for the taking. Can make it the "electric" brand and be done with it. Agree it's idiotic but GM doesn't shock me anymore.

    Ham tram' ick.

The Polish language has no love of vowels, so they left out the "i".

Anyway .... since the assembly plant is built across the city lines of Detroit and Hamtramck, it is referred to as "D-Ham".

I'd rather see the return of Oldsmobile and Pontiac, mostly for nostalgic reasons.. (never going to happen though, I get it)..

'HUMMER' is a dreadful name for all the reasons cited above.. why didn't they call it HUMVEE though? That would have made more sense.

Someone doesn’t understand the affect of pop culture. H2s and Slades go hand and hand. GM just screwed up by discontinuing it. Sell them in Cadillac show rooms and they would have done just fine.

Thanks. My Mom's side was Polish and she went to a Polish-Catholic elementary school in Pittsburgh where they taught it, and I can pronounce some words, but that one (the "tramck"part) has always stumped me. Didn't realize it was Polish.
