Korea's Hankyung News reports that Apple is in negotiations with Hyundai regarding cooperation on an electric, autonomous Apple-branded vehicle planned for 2027. Hyundai is expected to help develop batteries and manufacture the vehicle.

Hyundai Motor Co. said it is in early discussions with Apple Inc. on developing self-driving electric vehicles, sending its shares up as much as 24% in Seoul.

“Apple and Hyundai are in discussion, but as it is at early stage, nothing has been decided,” the South Korean manufacturer said in a statement Friday.

With development work still at early stage, Apple will take at least half a decade to launch an autonomous, electric vehicle, people with knowledge of the efforts have told Bloomberg News. Hyundai is accelerating a push into new technologies such as electric, driverless and flying cars, including setting up a $4 billion autonomous-driving joint venture.

Hyundai’s intraday stock surge in Seoul was the biggest since 1988. A cable TV unit of Korea Economic Daily earlier reported the discussions with Apple. Hyundai has completed internal discussions on the project and is awaiting approval from
the chairman, according to the report.

Apple declined to comment.

Next gen companies like Apple (next gen at least from my generation) are realizing that mature industries are ripe for disruption and leveraged as ways to incorporate new technology and new methods of acquiring data (personal or not) to enrich and enhance their AI/ML and as such provide "positive business outcomes" and/or "additional revenue streams" to potential users.

You are either the device that provides that data (think phone, car, appliance, or any other personal device) or you are the provider of these outcomes.

It seems to me that GM, Hyundai, Ford, etc. are the former and Apple, Google, and Tesla are the latter.

One can make a very good argument though that Tesla is both--that is, it will make money from you whether you buy their "device" and/or use the data from those devices...

But, one thing's for sure--you make more margin selling the processed/informed data to customers than you do selling the device.

Well, Apple could always go to Magana or Multimatic, or start ups like Rivian.

At the end of the day, this electric car thing is going to burn a lot of fingers when all is said and done. Given, Google, Apple, etc are late to Ze party.

How low Japan inc has fallen. They have totally been blindsided.

Now I see the Wisdom of Mother Barrah to turn one of her brands all electric.

Cruise automation better deliver

Hyundai's Proximity to the Korean battery makers likely helps their cause, not to mention Hyundai is unaligned with other automakers. The Detroit Automakers are chronically dysfunctional like many aging legacy companies so it's nearly impossible to imagine a relationship there. Apple is likely looking for total control over the product's development and won't share a tremendous amount with Hyundai architectures. Essentially Apple just needs a Kitchen to make their muffins.'

BTW, it's just "Apple", not "Apple Computer", that's ancient history.

:yup: They still are that, but the name has morphed to be all inclusive, to every piece of pie they have their fingers on. :)

Hmm...Apple using someone else to manufacture its devices? What's new about that?

Hyundai gets some brand logo coat tails from Apple and Apple gets access to scalable manufacturing capability.

Not the first time they've done this--won't be the last.

Apple being Apple...

Pray you're correct.

Remembering that the Mach E was basically the rescue of a BEV replacement of the C-Max, a vehicle primarily intended a a compliance vehicle for the European market. Sure, Ford did a wonderful job of salvaging it and giving it the best chance by bestowing the Mustang name to it but Inspite of all that, does the Mach E really move the needle on the conversation for BEVs?
I don't think so but time will tell.
