PickupTrucks.com: GM Developing New Small Truck?

While other manufacturers have announced plans to completely abandon the slow-selling midsize pickup segment, General Motors apparently thinks there's still life and new opportunity to be found in small trucks. GM is said to be working on a new compact runabout that's reminiscent of the original Chevrolet S-10, according to our sources.

The current Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon twins have been steadily losing sales and market share over the past few years. Year to date, the Colorado is down 30.3 percent from a year earlier and the Canyon is off 28.5 percent. Newly retired former GM vice chairman Bob Lutz said in February that the future of the two trucks were uncertain and, last year, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said it was GM's plan to end production at the Shreveport plant where the Colorado and Canyon are produced by 2012.

This is good news. I would really like for the bare necessities truck sketches to come to life. Compact (like the current Colorado/Canyon), modern powertrains, simple, rugged interiors and exteriors, and a capable 4x4 system that lends itself to aftermarket upgrades.

If it's true, I wonder if Chevy will keep the Colorado moniker or reviving old nameplates for the future small truck (Cheyenne, Apache, Scottsdale, S-10 is still alive in Brazil http://www.chevrolet.com.br/veiculos...10/index.shtml )

Another possibility, maybe they bring the small Tornado sold in Mexico. Some in Jalopnik, think also of a "UTE", future El Camino?

Let's hope they build a true small truck that puts a little more distance between itself and the full sizers on size / fuel economy / and price.

There's plenty of difference in size, it's the price and fuel economy that's too close for comfort

This could be a great idea IF GM manufactures it in the states and not in some foreign country. Truck buyers are traditionally more conservative/patriotic and wouldn't appreciate a foreign made vehicle as much. The problem then becomes keeping the manufacturing costs competitive. Opening a new plant may solve that?

I really hope GM is serious about this because I think it would be a great move.. I would love to see a top-notch small truck from GM with the name S-10 returning.

I'd like to point out that nowhere in the article was car-based, FWD, or unibody mentioned. I for one hope it is still really a truck.

Agreed. The S-10 name has equity, and so many people continue to drive their S-10s.

Price will be critical ... the S-10 was very affordable.

Great news. I'd like something to replace the Sonoma.

I hope this is real, like others. The small truck/SUV market (that's not FWD) is heavily underexploited.

The trouble is that when they redesign the small pickups, they make them bigger. Befoer you know it, they will be as big as the full size pickups.

Re: PickupTrucks.com: GM Developing New Small Truck?

Well, hopefully soon enough we will find out if we are dealing with the old GM or the new GM on this matter. The S-10 was a huge success for GM. To abandon those customers and move to the Colorado was a huge mistake.

I am sure that many people are driving Silverados that really don't need to. As the article said, the cost difference is a no-brainer for customers to move to the Silverado.

I think this would be a huge move for GM to get a smaller, affodable, and usable S-10 like truck back into their lineup.

Might as well bring back the S-10 name, very recognizable.

GM, bring on the new S-10. Please don't call it anything but!

Re: PickupTrucks.com: GM Developing New Small Truck?

The Canyon/Colorado isn't a bad truck at all. What it needs, IMO, is a six speed auto, DI on both engines (I really like the sound of the 5 cylinders) and a totally new interior. Nothing spectacular or expensive. Maybe BAS.

If (or should I said when) gas prices go up, buyers who need a truck will look again for compact pickup.
