Motor 1: Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Could Get Major Interior Update For 2021

GM allegedly launched the current-generation trucks before the new greenhouse was ready.

Changes are reportedly coming to the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, though it might not be what you expect. A new report from Muscle Cars and Trucks says GM will give its half-ton pickups a significantly updated interior for the 2021 model year. Automotive News also mentions a potential interior redux in the near future.

When you aim low, you need to scramble to catch up with the competition. While it's good to see them respond, I'm sure the updates will be limited.

As a T1 owner I'd welcome the update, it would make a excellent truck even better. Really, I don't have much to complain about in my Denali's interior, but some extra glitz and tech wouldn't hurt.

Re: Motor 1: Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Could Get Major Interior Update For 2021

    This is interesting...........................

"Perhaps of greater interest is the alleged story behind why a major interior change is coming so soon after an all-new model launch. As MC&T explains, GM apparently bumped up its launch window for the Silverado and Sierra in response to Ram’s all-new 2019 1500 pickup. To match that timeframe, concessions had to be made and an all-new interior was among them. It seems something much more upscale – at least on higher-end trim levels – was originally planned."

I'm not sure how to process this? "We were going to build a better interior, but due to the competition coming, we didn't"

(I'm having flashbacks to the 2013 Malibu being launched in January of 2012, Hybrid (sorry ECO) form only, 9 months before the standard engine version, because it knows better competitor product is coming soon)

FWIW: I looked back in all of my production forecast and product lifecycle reports, from 2015, 2016, 2017 and early 2018 and I do not see any fluctuation in launch dates.

Additionally, being a supplier of both the K2XX and T1XX, I never heard one mention of any movement with regard to EOP/SOP's on these platforms.
(they did move SOP (earlier) and EOP (later) with regard to the K2XX's made in Oshawa)

Outside of lacking an optional larger screen, like Ram; I don't think there is anything "wrong" with the T1XX interior, they refined the layout, it's problem is that it looks cheap, using cheap materials will give you that, and even some of the DIC graphics, were downgraded compared to the K2XX, perplexed at how that moves the timeline.

I also spent time, on several occasions, at MPG with regard to dash and center-stack, layout & positioning, a larger screen, was never part of any of the conversations, I don't think it ever crossed their mind.

GM just got caught cheapening-out the interior, if only they had used nicer quality materials than the K2XX; the refined layout, keyless ignition, larger cab and rear A/C vents, the lack of larger screen would have been just that; lacking optional larger screen. Instead its, "the interior isn't as nice as the K2XX, or the new Ram AND it doesn't have a large screen option!"

If this was true, Why didnt the previous generation interior didnt carry-over for the New gen? instead we got a even worse interior.

    :

The Design was horrible and blocky. That Huge Center stack bulge, and Passenger side of the Dash ruins the overall look.

The story doesn't make sense, they have a new interior. They are saying a cheaper interior was rushed into production in place of an interior they had planned on? I'd think that would take more time. The only scenario that makes sense to me was they had a higher trim for the top of the line, ran out of time, and instead replaced it with a mid-level trim.

But what does make sense is they are rushing a redesign to market to address complaints.

    I agree.

Looked at a Custom Trail Boss on the weekend. Interior really wasn't fitting with the beautiful exterior and price tag. LT's interior looks better but they all need an upgrade ASAP.

Anyone looking for a GM pickup only need to wait until announcement of this new interior and then watch the deals for current gen pickups be announced in parallel...

That is the other side of Not doing it right the First Time.

If in fact the New Interior is much better than the current Interior Current trucks will have to have the price slashed to sell, lowering the Value of the New Improved Interior Trucks.

This story if believable, sounds like "don't have enough time to do it right, but have time to do it over" This is not likely to result in a good outcome for GM. More likely they will end up spending more on the redesign, and ending up with less than an ideal result. The final result will be more lost marketshare to Ford and FCA.

As long as GMC plus Chevrolet light duty pickup sales are greater than Tundra and Titan, then all is good as far as GM management is concerned.

GM does have a long history of fixing things after the fact (as long as they are fixable). Kind of reminds me of the kid in class who thought it was more important to be the first one done with their test vs. handing it in last and having more questions answered correctly. I wonder where or how this line of thinking manifests itself in GM's culture.

I more inclined to believe it wasn't an issue of time, but more an issue of money. GM has been putting a lot of $$ into things the customer can't directly see or feel - the chassis. We've recently seen this with the world beating Alpha and Omega chassis and the current trucks - all the money went do developing light weight, fuel saving and great handling structures, which are all appreciated. However, I think GM took the money from other aspects of the vehicles to develop these chassis, and saying "we can fix the interior later after more money frees up".

Maybe they will take pieces from the upcoming Tahoe/Suburban and put them in the Silverado. That would make for a cheap upgrades in terms of capital investment.

That's the rumor I heard. Nothing wrong with the current interior for the lower end trucks. Then take the high end interior from the SUVs to make the top end trucks nicer looking. Other than a larger screen the interior isn't really lacking anything functional. People just want it to "look" nicer?

Edit: Actually, they need to add Auto UP to all the windows, not just the fronts. That would be a nice plus.

Does the kid that rush's through his test, really think they are going to be doing it over? No, they hope they did good enough to pass; only when they fail do they take the time to re-do.

It's as if they forget everything Lutz taught them, or thought it doesn't matter?

It would have to be all or nothing, the dashes like in the K2XX are not cross compatible/interchangeable, at least not in pieces.

Strange...coning from some of ya'll I thought there was nothing wrong w/ the interior...it was a usable interior that you can work w/ work gloves on.

Guess GM said otherwise, but their excuse is a little weird "We were going to make a better interior, but our competitor came out w/ a vehicle w/ a better interior so we rushed out a truck w/ a lower quality interior to meet them in the marketplace" doesn't pass the sniff test. Do they really think people are this damn dumb?
