John DeLorean’s Insane Story Of Drugs, Cars And Scandal Hits Theaters This Summer
    BY MICHAEL GAUTHIER
    MARCH 19, 2019
    carscoops.com

We’ve seen a number of automakers come and go over the years, but none of them have flamed out quite like the DeLorean Motor Company.

The story of its founder, John DeLorean, is coming to movie theaters later this year and it promises to different than your typical automotive flick. As IFC Flims notes, Framing John DeLorean combines “money, power, politics, drugs, scandal and fast cars.”

The nearly two hour movie recounts the life and times of John DeLorean as it takes a look at his “meteoric rise through the ranks of General Motors” and his passion for performance which helped lead to the development of the Pontiac GTO.

As a car guy (and a bit of a history nerd), this actually looks like it would be worth seeing.

Can't believe how well Alec Baldwin pulls off looking like John Z --- I know he's got talented makeup folks aiding in his converstion, but still very well done.

Krikey...fookin Baldwin. Anybody but that creep.

Might be interesting anyway. DeLorean was a once-in-a-generation genius.

Yep. This movie is the first time in a long time that I am looking forward to seeing Alec Baldwin in a movie.

I'm in for sure - even if the movie is a little exaggerated I'm sure it will make for great entertainment.

Re: John DeLorean Biopic Hits Theaters This Summer

I was just beginning a co-op program with Pontiac the summer of 1967. They didn't know what to do with me every day so I would deliver mail at the Pontiac Central office several days a week. At that time it was still in the old Oakland Motor Company building at196 Oakland Ave in Pontiac. Very primitive by today's standards. "John Z" as we referred to him was the King of Cool at Pontiac. I saw him a few times when I delivered mail to his office and he was nice and joked with me. One Saturday I was working on the loading dock on Saturday receiving mail and some special letterhead paper. I didn't mind because I was paid extra. John Z cruised up to the loading dock where I was working in a red Ferrari. He joked that he and I were the only hard working guys there on a Saturday and complained that that he had to exchange the Ferrari for a Bonneville. He had an evening dinner at the Bloomfield Hills Country Club and couldn't be seen in a Ferrari.
When he left Pontiac for Chevrolet, Pontiac was not the same. I never saw him again. Later I got to know the Barrister that he and Colin Chapman used in Northern Ireland and I even got to know the Assistant US Attorney who prosecuted him. Let's say they had a much less favorable impression of John Z than I.
When all is said and done I will see the movie too. Wouldn't miss it.

Read this book, and it will become readily apparent that GM was the wrong place for someone as brilliant and flamboyant as DeLorean:

Though Z Man was on track to be CEO of GM, he departed Chibby about six months after arrival IIRC. From what I've read, the stiffs, the bureaucracy, the lack of imagination stifled him, smothered him. That's not hard to believe.

The stiffs put a boot on his neck when he had some excellent, creative Tiger ads.

Too bad he got sideways later on. Not all geniuses are the most stable folks in the parlor.

Alec Baldwin drives me nuts, as an actor I really like him. Then he has to go open up his yap about politics and totally turns me off.

My dad was a product engineer at Pontiac from '47 to '85 and knew DeLorean reasonably well. He told me some things about him that were not at all flattering. Was he smart? Sure. Was he hard driving? Yup. Was he all about himself? Absolutely.

Alec Baldwin is a fine actor but scumbag otherwise. Not sure if I can stomach him playing John Z or not.

Agreed. I think I can look beyond his doucheness and judge him on his acting in this movie... I think.
