GM Talks With Amazon-Backed Electric Truckmaker May Be Dead

Talks between General Motors Co. and electric-vehicle startup Rivian Automotive Inc. about the largest U.S. carmaker buying an equity stake have reached an impasse and may be dead, people familiar with the matter said.

GM had negotiated potentially taking a stake in Rivian and forging a partnership that may have helped the Plymouth, Michigan-based startup bring fully electric trucks and SUVs to market faster. GM was widely expected to become a strategic investor alongside Amazon.com Inc., which in February led a $700 million equity raise by the closely held company.

Good. GM should be working to bring its own BEV trucks and SUVs to market rather than helping Amazon/Rivian bring their trucks to market sooner. All they need is another 3 way relationship that complicates the business and ultimately leads to sharing profits 3 ways.

Right?! I read this trying to think of why GM would even go down this route. I get that they are all about limiting liability and investment dollars, but this seems like such a silly idea. They have so much tech to do this, and obviously the vehicles to put it in.

Yup, bring an all-electric GM truck, perhaps GM should take a stake in Via motors

    GM calls off investment

GM calls off investment talks with Rivian
    Apr 12, 2019, 9:28am ET
    by Drew Johnson

General Motors has reportedly called off investment talks with electric vehicle maker Rivian.

GM expressed interest in investing in the Tesla rival following Rivian's successful launch at the 2018 Los Angele auto show. Rivian impressed at the LA show with its battery-powered R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV.

According to reports from the time, GM was interested in using Rivian's all-electric platform to underpin larger SUV and truck models. GM is currently developing its own EV platform, but it's intended to serve as the basis for small and mid-size electric vehicles.

Rivian would have benefited from GM's production know-how and global purchasing power. Without GM's help, it will likely take longer for Rivian to get its products to market.

The exact reason for the talks collapsing remains unknown, but it sounds as if GM wanted to make its deal with Rivian exclusive. According to Bloomberg, Rivan founder R.J. Scaringe wants "to keep his options open.”

But even without GM's help, Rivian is far from sunk. The company has already received a $700 million investment from Amazon and reportedly has a line of suitors wanting to invest.

It seems to me GM has no need for a partnership with an electric vehicle manufacturer. Isn't it true GM is the undisputed leader in EV technology? Why partner? Just bring out the EVs now.

The fact that GM was talking to Rivian and they haven't "just brought out EV's now" might give you some insight to the delta between your perception and reality.

Amazon could invest a few billion on Tesla. They could use it as a reason to say they are green, which they want to claim, but aren’t really serious about. But putting money in to Tesla to get their semi’s on track, and buying them, would go a long way to proving they are serious about being green.

Would have been a smart move. What rivian brings to the table was risk taking ...something the people at gm clinic to death.

Im disappointed and hopeful the talks resume in the mear future.

Explain to me again why Voltec isn't in a Silverado/Tahoe/Suburban/Traverse/anything that has usable space + function?

GM I believe saw something perhaps on an infrastructure level that was just not conducive to investment.

Very wise move GM, although l like the idea of an electric truck l wouldn't be seen dead in a hidous Rivian, would rather wait till petroleum run bone dry if Rivian was the only pick-up left on GM's pick-up buying menu.

Would be owning F-150 electric truck laughing at GM's Micky Mouse Rivian from afar, great move GM that would have more money flushed down tubes at huge loss.

It appears from GM's actions they are behind the curve in EV's. GM is seeking help wherever they can get it (Rivian) and haven't had a EV launch of significance since Bolt. What gives? If GM were as advanced in EV as they would like us to believe, we would be seeing full EV's and electric hybrids throughout GM's line up. Instead they are conspicuous in their absence.
