GM Seeks Tariff Relief for Ventilator Parts

WASHINGTON -- General Motors Co. is asking the Trump administration to drop import tariffs on Chinese parts that the auto maker needs to make ventilators, saying the levies will make it more expensive to build desperately needed machines that can save lives.

Not surprised, I just got some more parts from digikey (electronics are a essential biz) and the resistors and I think the switches I purchased were both tariff'ed. 10 or 15%. Probably half of all electronics come thru china.

Not to sound too xenophobic or anything, I would hope that when the dust clears from all this that the U.S. closely reviews everything we DON'T make here as part of a comprehensive set of recommendations post COVID-19.

There's nothing zinnofobik about national security. Imported meds, imported electronics, imported medical equipment...from our #1 enemy in the world? That's not xenophobic, it's insane.

Maybe the PR dept. can try to get the beancounters under control for a bit.

Re: GM Seeks Tariff Relief for Ventilator Parts

Makes sense. I assume it will cost GM (Ford and any other company that doesn't normally produce ventilators) more to build a ventilator due to their not being set up to build them and its not a long term business forcing them to amortize the costs over a short timeframe. Adding tariffs to these higher costs just adds grease to the fire.

And GM, Ford, etc. will get thanked with a CNN price gouging piece with zero questions as to why it costs more for them to build these. But it will make a great headline for CNN to try to prop up their low ratings.

I'm glad GM is seeking relief, but GM isn't the only company being negatively affected by such tariffs. All tariffs and any other import restrictions on medical devices and parts/components should be abolished immediately. And never reinstated!

You *can* buy a 1% tolerance metal film resistor made in the US today for about 10X the cost of the Chinese one. So your choices are buy the Chinese one for 5c and pay 1/2c in tariff or buy the US one for 50c. Your choice. And of course the Chinese one usually is in stock to the tune of tens of thousands for most values while the US one has a 6 week lead time. Again your choice.

And because of the current attitude, China has accelerated its desire to be self sufficient. So they are quickly moving towards being able to make the high end chips like processors. I can tell you, the margins on those processors are fantastic. The margins on the resistors, not so much.

We allow China to kill hundreds of thousands world wide and ruin the world economy with their filthy 3rd world live animal markets so we want to import MORE of their crap? We saw this happen with SARS and we did nothing but increase dependency on their exports. Time for the world to wake up and isolate China.

Gov't should add a stipulation that when things clear up that GM try harder to do more here in the US instead of farming it out, especially to China even though GM may think China's the hot market "place to be" so to speak...

GM's Public communications department is a disaster. They just cannot manage messaging, can they? Everything coming out of GM should be just how a Chevrolet Truck hauled the parts from one part of the country to another non stop.. in record time.

My Word, I would clear that place in a heart beat. They are total morons, worst of all GM leadership is totally inept.

Right on. Once upon a time GM had a PR Department that was the envy of the American business community. Now they seem to be reactive and one step late on every issue.
