GM Safety Program Elevates Repair To Major Recall

    Reuters.com
    October 31, 2019

General Motors is recalling 638,000 U.S. sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks because a wheel-speed sensor could fail and cause unintended braking, it said Thursday.

The recall covers 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and Yukon and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive.

The sensor failure could result in unintended activation of the driveline protection system, and cause unintended braking of the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor. That could cause the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash, the Detroit automaker said.

GM said it was not aware of any crashes relating to the issue but found 150 field claims alleging the condition caused unintended braking or lateral-vehicle motion.

A GM dealer in May submitted a warranty report relating to the issue in a 2018 GMC Yukon, and two day later, a GM brand quality manager submitted the report to GMís Speak Up For Safety program that tracks potential safety issues, which prompted a GM investigation and testing.

Re: GM Safety Program Elevates Repair To Major Recall

    2014:
On February 6, 2014, General Motors recalled about 800,000 of its small cars due to faulty ignition switches, which could shut off the engine while the vehicle was in motion and thereby prevent the airbags from inflating. ... The fault had been known to GM for at least a decade prior to the recall being declared.
    2019:
A GM dealer in May submitted a warranty report relating to the issue in a 2018 GMC Yukon, and two day later, a GM brand quality manager submitted the report to GM’s Speak Up For Safety program that tracks potential safety issues, which prompted a GM investigation and testing.
    My have times changed...thankfully.

Sounds like the "Speak Up For Safety" program is working as intended. Always good to hear that people identifying the issues aren't being silenced.

The 4 Monkey thing, doesn't cut it anymore!

Things have changed since Ignition Gate, even on the Ford Side. Antifreeze Leak/Potential Fire Hazzard, Block Heater Cord/ Stop Sale Bulletin (Not just Disable to sell). Send Techs to Rail Yards to replace Fiesta Seat Back Bolts "so it wasn't an Official Recall" just a Production Glitch.

You have a point - but it proves GM is still building vehicles with numerous safety defects. Some models have accrued 10 - 15 safety recalls for one model year.

Poor quality? Poor engineering? Poor manufacturing? Poor design? Or, a combination?

I won't dispute any of your claims, but to be fair I think all auto manufacturers are guilty of penny-pinching to appease Wall Street with fat bottom lines. On one hand I completely agree with you, but on the other hand, at least this stuff is getting caught QUICKLY and fixed properly.

Good on GM for having a safety program that works. While it will takes years to gain back public confidence from previous failures, provable programs like this will go a long way.
