GM’s car-sharing service Maven to exit eight cities

GM is scaling back its Maven car-sharing company and will stop service in nearly half of the 17 North American cities in which it operates.

A spokesperson who confirmed Maven was shutting down in some cities, without identifying the locations or number that will remain, said the company plans to focus on markets that have the strongest demand and growth potential.

The WSJ, which was the first to report the impending shutdown, said Maven will continue to operate in Detroit, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Toronto. However, TechCrunch has received information from Maven customers that the car-sharing and peer-to-peer service in Washington, D.C. was also shutting down. The Maven Gig service will remain in Washington D.C.

I'm still unconvinced of all these new transportation models from maven to uber. They all seem to lose money by the buckets. Does anyone know of any of these new options that actually turn a profit. Caddy also cut down their book by cadillac thing.

I believe they are seen as the service side for the ROBO-CAR-as-a-service IE you will "UBER" OR "MAVEN" a car to take you to work and GM-cruise will supply the "car" and the "back end" support with MAVEN offering the "front end" OR consumer facing part

I agree - I suspect Lyft and Uber may need to merge and then raise prices in order to make money. Otherwise it seems like years of losses ahead as they seem to compete on price. I know I always take whatever is cheaper.

The drivers already think they're competing too much on price.
Despite claims to the contrary, driverless cars are not coming soon.
People are not willing to pay enough to make either the drivers or the companies happy.

The losses will continue unabated so expect some bankruptcies.

Agree and only see Uber surviving and that is only because they were smart enough to expand into Uber Eats and their Logistics Tech will make Trucking much more efficient and help attract more Drivers who can make more money while lowering overall shipping costs. There are many better ways to reduce labor costs than getting rid of the drivers and I agree that driverless cars are very far away and may never happen at all.

Can see GM dumping Maven at a loss very soon and will be the first of many moves away from an ill advised "vision" of ideas that were never going to work in the real world. As Millennials age and start families, they will move out of urban areas and have no desire to share a "family car" with other families (just take a moment to think of what happens in "family cars" when there are a couple of under five year olds are on board - not getting that all cleaned up). They will also not be using Uber or anyone else to shuttle the kidos to practice, shopping, school, friends houses or any of the other short notice, overlapping and drawn out delayed trips. Some of GM's managers need to start living in the "Real World" for a little while.

I agree, driver-less is 8-10 years away IMO.

I do think people will pay more though. Users I know barely look at the cost. They just like the service versus the taxi racket.

I used Maven in Denver. It was actually really convenient but the app and it's functionality using it as the key for the car could use some work.
