This official GM website will help you determine if your current vehicle qualifies for a government subsidy; and if so, how much of a discount you can expect.

Simply enter your current vehicle, and then the vehicle you want to purchase and the GM calculator will do the math for you.

This government program begins on July 23rd.

Note that Hyundai (no doubt winner of the 2009 Marketing Department of the year award) has the program in effect already. They are simply fronting the money to the dealer in advance of the start date. Bravo Hyundai!

Now if only there was a reasonable MSRP/rebate on the GMT355's...

I'm tired of this being called what it isn't...

Your trade-in vehicle must have been manufactured less than 25 years before the date you trade it in. It must have a "new" combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less. It must be in drivable condition and have been continuously insured and registered to the same owner for the full year preceding the trade-in.
I fail to see how the government and GM (and other domestic) can legally sell America this program as "cash-for-clunkers"

Legally, it should have been "cash-for-gluzzers" as that is the obvious reason this bill was created.

I hit a deer last night and the front end of my Blazer is totally messed up. The Vehicle is "driveable" but definitely not worth more than $4500. I feel this is an opportunity!

No, we had a whole thread about this in the days following the passage of the bill. It was written for the auto industry (and apparently mostly by the auto industry, as per phish phood). The mileage requirements are just 'extra' because that gets more people on board with the idea. That way it doesn't seem like just another auto industry handout (which it is, effectively) but also something to help with emissions and oil use. Plus, they had to have some sort of standards to base this all on (for the older cars)--might as well have been mileage.

Is this in place of trade in value or in addition to trade in value?

Bummer, I wanted to trade my 98 Nissan Frontier 4x4 in on a Crew Cab 4x4 Colorado but it isn't going to let me.

I wonder if the dealer would let me do some sort of shell game where I buy a Colbalt and instantly trade it in on a Colorado without even putting the keys in the car.

This government incentive is your TOTAL trade-in allowance.

By law, your vehicle can not be resold and thus, must be scrapped.

Example: A friend of my brother has a 1997 Isuzu Rodeo worth about $750. He plans to trade it for a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu LT2-4Cyl. The government will pay him $4500 for his Rodeo. His incentive is worth about $3750. IN ADDITION, he will be able to deduct the sales tax on his purchase. That's quite a deal.

I think the only good thing about the program is that the number of people who own a qualifying vehicle that also plan to, or have the means to purchase a brand new vehicle might be relatively low.

    Not exactly.

The government incentive PLUS scrap value MINUS $50 in dealer handling fees is your total trade-in allowance.

OK, so what about this: the dealer shreds the car's title and sells it to someone who will part it out. Whatever he sells the car for is what he pays you. WHAT IF I were to buy the car back in order to part it out myself? I'm not even paying for the car because I get whatever the dealer gets for it anyways. See, I would almost consider doing this on my parents' 1996 Nissan Quest. Dealer shreds the title, I get the car, I sell the parts, then I call a scrap service to tow it out of my driveway once dismantled... any reason why that wouldn't work?

I will be contacting some dealers once this gets going and see if they can play a shell game so I can get a Colorado Crew Cab 4x4. Otherwise I will be keeping my POS.
