GM makes another investment in new six-speed automatics

"General Motors upped this week's total investment in its new six-speed automatics to $500 million with Thursday's announcement that it was investing over $330 million in an upgrade to its Warren, Michigan plant, which will produce compact FWD and AWD models of the new transmission.

All told, GM's investment in the design, development and production of the new model automatics now stands at $1.7 billion.

The Warren plant will produce the new Hydra-Matic 6T70 and 6T75 six-speeds (pictured at right) for GM's midsize sedans and crossovers, including the Saturn Aura, Pontiac G6, Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave. The new transmission debuts in 2007 models.

As in the bigger versions of the six-speed, a low first gear improves launch performance while an overdrive sixth gear boosts highway fuel economy.

The the mechanical elements of the new transaxle were co-developed by GM and (gasp!) Ford, but the controls, calibrations and operation of the transmission are unique to each company."

Yeah but GM jumps in late, once GM has 6-speed running at full swing, competitors use double clutch.

Stop being so pessemistic. At least GM is now using 6-speeders when numerous other competitors (non-luxury ones) are still stuck with 5's. It'll only be a matter of time before the transverse 6-speeders make their way across the board, say into the smaller Cobalts and larger Lucernes and LaCrosses.

Only Mercedes, BMW, and I think Audi are the only ones using 7-speeders, with Lexus bringing out an 8. And to my most recent memory, only Volkswagen is using DSG in some of its vehicles, while other similar systems are merely sequential manuals (Ferrari and BMW) or automatics with manual shifting (everyone else). So DSG has a long ways to go. And lets not forget CVT's (which Toyota excels at and America is slowly following).

    Way to go, GM.

I think Jaguar has a 7speed automatic too. I vaguely remember reading something about one a few or some months ago.

For GM finally getting around to putting 6speed autos in their cars, GOOD!
Though they need a 6speed auto for the coming RWD cars! I am sure they are aware they need one....if not, then they better get on getting one. Maybe Holden or Opel has one they can model one after or just rebadge it??

Actually Nissan is the one excelling at CVT's and America has actually been producing cars with them almost just as long.

I have NOT heard of a good CVT yet. Everyone expects them to shift and they dont. Ive heard they also program them to have fake shifts points cause thats what people are used to. Keep building quality Hydra-matics and everything will work itself out. Dont worry....Be Happy...

Yes, and one of those is reverse. I do remember way way back, a guy refusing to buy a Japanese bike because they had 5 gears instead of 4 like his Harley.

Remember the PowerGlide 2-speed transmission available in the late 60's Chevy's??
With a small-block V8 and cheap gasoline, you don't need many gears. I guess things are a lot different now!!
